Is pinball /vr/?

I fucking love pinball. Playing Pokemon Pinball on my GBC was a lot of fun and actually taught me a lot about how to hit specific targets on a cabinet! The city I live in has a lot of pinball cabinets around so whenever I'm bored I can just throw a few quarters in and play. Pic related, my fucking favorite

However, are pinball cabinets video games?
>>
Im pretty sure it is!
I love pinball aswell and play it anytime i see one. sadly i dont think there is any in my hometown :(

I usually play every cabinet a location has, even dumb ones (I'll try to find the specific one that I fucking hate playing on but I like it because it looks stupid) but I came across this bad boy today.

The sound effects are kind of annoying and totally over the top but it's worth it, that and the layout is pretty sweet.

Some tables used the digital scoreboard for mini games(like the T2 pin) and what not but other than that I would consider them just 'games' myself. Good question tho.
>>
>>2847681
they're not video games, but the board says retro games, not retro video games. However they do sit right on the border to video games. No generic screen as output (the primary output of a pinball is the playfield, the dot matrix is aux data), but a complex inner state, be it hardwired, solid state, or a ROM and a CPU, and controller-like input

Yes we did, mostly for bars, but most of them have shut down in the 2000' in France, and there hasn't been an arcade scene where I live, so vidya pinball is almost the only pinball I ever played. I can't even remember the few tables I played IRL because they were really generic, I was already glad to find one.

Maybe, but I don't think we ever had much of an Arcade culture here in Sweden. I'm born 92, but I have seen very few arcade machines outside of the Finland ferries.

Thar bar downtown has a room full of arcade machines, it's the most arcade cabinets I've ever seen on land, there's an airhockey table and the Twilight Zone pinball table there, as well as a House Of The Dead cabinet.

There's an adequate selection of games, but I can't help but think this doesn't compare to a real American arcade (the ones that are left). I think rates are higher too. American machines are typically fed quarters, in Sweden, you put in a 10sek coin in almoat all machines, and that's almost a dollar. They don't seem to compensate for the higher cost in my experience.
Damn it would be nice to live in the US, for arcades, and many other reasons.

Pinball tables are even rarer.
The TWZ one was like the first one I had seen in a decade. I think I saw a T2 table at a fair once, it ate my coin and didn't let me play.

When we moved into our new house this machine came with it. They patched the basement door leading outside so there was no way of moving it without destroying it, so we kept it. Was a family hit for a few years but now is collecting dust. Could use a few repairs but neat nonetheless.

Most arcades are long gone but they are kinda coming back mostly in the form of barcades. The last REAL arcade I was in was the Galloping Ghost in Chicago(pic related). The remake of Timeshock finally got its PC version, but it's only a hastily compiled release with the minimum functions needed to run.

Apparently the default "high" view (which isn't designed for cabinets per se) looks incredible on a cabinet, though.

actual release, or just preview/work-in-progress?
Will it be available outside of the kickstarter and outside of steam, when it gets released?
>>
>>2852006
I think it's a disgrace that the PC version is merely an afterthought, instead of being the definite or primary version of the game. After all, it's the most versatile platform, in terms of connecting to virtual pinball machines or non-standard displays and inputs. What happened to ProPinball being about the most realistic pinball you could get without a table?

If you want to buy tables for Pinball Arcade, start with their "Season 1" pack, perhaps grab Season 2, then cherry pick from the newer seasons, unless there are enough tables that you like in a given season that the sum of their combined cost is at least as high as the bulk price.

You see, Farsight Studios really frontloaded their good tables when they started, then they jacked up prices and changed the pricing structure when they realized their mistake. The end result is that you get less for your money as you buy newer tables, in terms of both quantity and overall quality. Nowadays, their draw is releasing uncommon or licensed tables, which can be really hit-or-miss for people, because the prices are now so high. If you really like an expensive table, hold off on buying it until you consistently hit the cutoff score (which has been getting harder and harder to do, because Farsight has been wising up there, too). Other than that, you could always check out the free table of the month when you're bored.

Is there actual strategy to pinball? Are some cabinets more difficult than others? Pinball fascinates me because I feel like I've missed out on a whole generation of games because I was born later.
>>
>>2856613
>Is there actual strategy to pinball?
With enough practice you can control pretty precisely where the ball will flip to. There are also a handful of common techniques to put the ball where you want it, like switch sides and stuff. Pinball can be a highly controlled game.
When you're out of the reach of the flippers, you can still have some control with bumping the machine. There's hardware inside to keep you from fucking with it too much, but skilled players understand when to bump, and how to bump, to keep the ball(s) in play.

>Are some cabinets more difficult than others?
The positioning of ramps, targets, the rewards you get for them, and the followups you can do after you hit something, vary greatly between tables. Some tables can be stupidly frustrating, because you can never get into the flow, targets are painfully difficult to hit, and the tiniest mistakes can you make lose the ball. Other tables meanwhile can be pure bliss, where you feel like a god. That's on top of the tasks of the table actually being entertaining.

>I feel like I've missed out on a whole generation of games because I was born later.
Go browse the web for local machines. There are some dedicated websites, but even a generic google maps search can help. While you'll likely not find any dedicated arcades or anything, if you're in a moderately big city, you can find places that have the occasional machine put up.
If all else fails, you can still do any of the numerous simulations on consoles and computers. While of course not as involved as the real machine, they teach a lot on the general concepts and flow of play throughout the ages.

I play both so it's nice when the emulation (vp 10/ pro pinball) is very similar to playing a real machine. Pin arc is a bit of fun sure but most of it's tables now are available for vp10 with far superior physics for free so even if we just pitch pin arc against vp10 why bother with the inferior pin arc?

Don't buy pinball arcade tables. The physics in that game are so fucking bad it's ridiculous. And I'm not only talking about vid related, it just feels completely wrong.
You can try all tables for free though (game will stop when you reach high score #4) and learn the table rules. Thats the only thing the game is good for basically.

Timeshock's physic engine (released in 1997) is a million times better. It's still being used in the remake but they said they will make a new engine (which will take them like 5 years considering their working pace)

Addams Family easily lives up to the hype. If you see one, play it. Heard how great of a table it was and finally had the chance a couple months back to try it out. Bunch of other pins and cabs at the arcade but I just kept gravitating back to the AF table all night. Sooo good.

Medieval Madness and Attack From Mars. Pretty similar games, but they're both great experiences.

Addams Family is the biggest selling table of all time, it's mad popular and fun.
Twilight Zone was Pat Lawlor's follow-up, hellishly popular as well but can be intimidating for the uninitiated, as >>2863325 mentioned.
Medieval Madness and Attack from Mars are pretty much the same table with different themes, but it's a great design and easy to get into.
Lord of the Rings is popular despite being a piece of junk, its convoluted ruleset makes Twilight Zone seem like tic tac toe.

Basically if you see a Williams table play it. They produced some of the best and highly regarded tables especially in the late 1980s and early 90s

Help me out, /vr/. I remember playing a pinball PC game, I want to say it was late 90s, but might have been early 00s (for some reason I'm thinking 1998). There was a horror table and I remember the graphics being pre-rendered. I seem to remember there being a mansion on the artwork, but that might be wrong.

I've been trying to find this game and nothing really hit that "nostalgia zone" where I know for sure I've found what I'm looking for, so there's a chance I'm remembering things wrong.

Completly disagree, it's extremely over rated play and only popular due to the timing of it's release with the successful film and not because it's actually good.

Incorrect it's only a small percentage of people who even know how to play most people get drawn to the gimmicks and presentation thus why addams family is extremely popular with most people and rarely comes up in actual great players favorites lists.

Not him but:
https://pinside.com/pinball/top-100
Addams Family is ranked #6. This is a weekly ranking and I have never seen AF outside of the top 10 the handful of times I have checked the rankings.

If anyone is curious how they rank pins:
>This is the Pinside Top 100 list for December 20th, 2015. The list is compiled weekly, and consists of all 70117 approved user ratings on solid state games. A game currently needs to have at least 15 votes from approved raters to appear in the Top 100.
The next Top 100 update will be in 5 days and 12 hours.
>>
>>2870093
>consists of all 70117 approved user ratings on solid state games
That actually would match the point >>2870065 was trying to make. The majority of user ratings are from non-pros, who, in anon's opinion, are swayed by gimmicks, presentation and peer pressure ("hey, I'm not a professional, but people love the table, and I had fun, so it must be an awesome table"). Meanwhile the few pros would, again, in anon's opinion, rate the table lower, because it isn't that exciting to play.

>The next Top 100 update will be in 5 days and 12 hours.
Kind of meaningless, because the user ratings won't and can't change that drastically. It helps to bring new tables into the ranking quickly, but beyond that, the ranking's probably fairly stable.

"it's not physical so you can't steal it!!!!" is a totally illogical justification for piracy. Pirate stuff if you want (I do) but please don't try to act like it has no economic/moral consequences. Most of these games have hundreds/thousands of hours poured into them, at least respect the people who made it enough to acknowledge that their work is not worth nothing because it can be duplicated.

>no mention of zen pinball

So, what does /vr/ think of zen pinball? Seems to be the de-facto way to play new pinball tables on consoles nowadays.
>>
>>2871056
Gimmicky, but not in a good way. Just not my thing. Odd because I usually love video game renditions of pinball.
>>
>>2871056
Zen Pinball is very good, physics-wise, but the sound design is too restrained and quiet. Real pinball machines, especially the 80s-90s Williams games, have loud, booming sound effects, catchy, up-tempo music, and enthusiastic shouting voiceovers. The Zen Pinball tables feel kinda lifeless and subdued by comparison.
>>
>>2870309
I never take my phone out while the ball is in motion, i only take it out to take a picture of either a ball stuck somewhere that you think would never get stuck or to snap a picture of a high score.
>>
>>2871056
i'm sure its actually alright, but i personally really dislike it I probably dislike for nit picky reasons though the speed trail of the ball bothers me because the ball is going nowhere near as fast for the trail to even make sense, the sound design is lacking. normally im not a big fan of pinball machines attached to todays big name media, because i tend to dissmiss them in my mind as lazy cash grabs.

But in Zen pinball alot of the tables with big media brand names attached to them lack deep rulesets, have nearly identical playfield layouts between each table, the playfield art itself feels pretty half assed and the art is very cluttered because for some godamn reason the top half of EVERY table has to have an assload of ramps all in the same area.

I've played both stern family guy, and the one for zen pinball the difference between how lazy the zen pinball family guy table is disheartening, and coming from someone who really isn't fond of family guy I would take SERIOUS consideration into buy the machine if it was cheaper personally

Rest assured, if you have a machine, something WILL break on it.

I'm lucky in a sense that I've got a friend who actually enjoys working on old electronics. He comes over and fixes shit for free as long as he gets to play the machine. I still have to buy parts when necessary, but I don't think I've spent more than $200 total on parts this whole year.

what stuff is usually failing? Also, are newer or older machines a bigger pain? I imagine older machines have electronics and electric components that tend to fail easier, while modern machines probably replaced formerly sturdy bits with cheap plastic or other weak materials

Not that guy but playing pinball a lot out in the wild I notice that most machines require some maintenance frequently. Usually not always replacing broken parts but tinkering and adjusting...
Flippers get stuck on the regular. Bumpers, kickouts and slingshots can fuck up and require tinkering and readjusting frequently as they, like the flippers, are always getting lots of use and wear and tear during play.
If it moves and/or is mechanical it's going to malfunction or break at some point.

I'd like to own a table but the upkeep can seem daunting.
>>
>>2874515
Any part of the machine. Really. Anything from displays to lights to flippers to bumpers to rubber rings to switches to driver boards... anything.

One of my machines had all of its general illumination out. Turns out it was a burnt connector on the board.

Board issues are the worst because your entire game can get fucked up. I was lucky it was just the lights.

Yeah but that's not out yet right?
And how can you define what a gimmick is on a pinball table? The introduction of flippers could be construed as a gimmick that has become a mainstay. Solid State Electronics? When they were introduced didn't they make them chime and click in an attempt to sound like EMs? Sounds gimmicky.

Gimmicks done right... Champion Pub anybody?
>spinning 2 sided bash toy
>jump rope
>speed bag
>jump ramps

The ultimate gimmick table has to be The Twilight Zone, insanely popular but overloaded to the point that even Lawlor has admitted in hindsight that "I may have gone a bit too far in some places".

Kansascityfag here. The Up-Down Bar & Arcade opened up this year about 4 blocks from me. 78 cabinets, including a dozen pinball machines, Addams Family, South Park and Terminator 2 foremost among them. Every machine in the house costs a quarter, they've all been waterproofed from beer spills, and giant AC fans keep the house cool when packed.

My only problem is I appear to suck at Addams Family pinball.
>>
>>2888367
That's crazy. I understand a Barcade's main source of revenue is booze but a quarter for every game is a loss for them when you factor in maintenance.
>>
>>2888474
Bars and pubs are getting in on that hipster money by stocking niche microbrewery craft beers and spiced rum cocktails n shit. The kind of elite super filtered by hand pure arctic stream shit that they can overcharge for that take advantage of the current trend of beer and alcohol snobbery.
Arcade machines need fuck all maintenance and venues make sweetheart deals with the guys who rent them out. They don't even have to pay for the machines (bar electricity) just promise some real estate where people will play them, the machine guy keeps the coin profits as long as the machines are up and working.
>>
>>2888490
So, the anon you're responding to said the low charges don't cover the maintenance cost, and you respond by saying maintenance costs don't matter, and the owner of the machine actually just gets the money put into the machine, and has to deal with the maintenance cost, as no other aspect of the pub can be used to subsidize the machines? Somehow I don't think you thought that plan all the way through.
Keep in mind that Anon was talking about pinball machines, not video games. They do have non-trivial maintenance costs, thanks to all the mechanical parts.
>>
>>2888474

You're right, and they don't even charge that much for the hipster shit like truffle pizzas and Surge cocktails.

However, the owner of the space apparently is an old wizard himself, and tinkers with the cabinets for fun, and they do charge 10 bucks an entry for the N64 tournaments each week, so they gotta make some profit that way.
>>
>>2888754
I know somebody who rents out arcade machines as a 2nd business, it's not his day job because it makes barely enough to survive on. I was basing "my plan" on the owner of the bar not owning the actual games. As 78 machines, a few pintables is a big cost outright if you're starting up a new Barcade.
But you sound like an expert on the matter so why don't you answer his question and cut the passive aggressiveness?
