I've been playing this non-stop on the Sega Saturn you find in Shenmue's house in Shenmue1.
I finally won a game from Tomato store and I chose Space Harrier. It's basically an emulation of the Saturn game but I have to start up Shenmue to play it.

The fastest way to fire is to actually hold down the button, which will fire a rapid-fire blast of lasers before it starts to charge. So once you get the rhythm down you can actually do a lot more damage that way.

No. You don't have to mash the button just press it in rhythm. When you press it and hold it the arwing will fire three quick shots before activating the loaded laser and locking on (unless you prevent that). So if you constantly re-press it like ~1 second apart you can have rapid fire of ~200 shots/min. I don't think the laser can fire any faster by mashing.
