Thoughts? Memories? Favourite cars/ tracks?

Used to play the shit out of those games with my brother when we were kids. Once, I tuned our Mitsubishi Galant with something I didn't like, didn't know how to reverse the changes so I deleted the whole save file. Brother almost killed me when he found out.

What I miss from the first game is the awesome rock/electronic music. Also the fact that every car dealer had its own music in the background, that was nice.
>>
>>2810994
GT 2 is my favorite PS1 game even if the US soundtrack is outdated imo and not really my style. The effort and graphics still blow me away.
>>
I had the demo first, and I used to try to flip my car over as hard a possible and also try to damage the car. It kind of pissed me off that it wouldnt let you do that.

endurance runs were great fun a and time killers. The rewards were super nice for getting first place. Thats what I remember most. spending an hour doing endurance shit.
>>

>>
Gotta love me some Carpokemon 2. I bought it again last year to try to recover my car collection cuz the memcard lost it cuz I hadn't play it for years.

The one thing I remember the most is doing the 80's race where you get a souped up 80's Skyline with a resale value of 150,000 CR and then selling it to buy cooler cars.
>>
My favourite retro racing game, undisputed. I can't even talk about memories because I never stopped playing it since I first got more than 12 years ago. The GT300 Amemiya RX7 and Midfield "totally-not-Suzuka-for-beginners" Raceway are my choices. I'm actually having a very good time playing it again now I got my first steering wheel and using the negCon plugin with the emulators, I'm basically relearning how to play and getting amazed with tracks I never got good at first
>>
aside from GT4, I don't think I have ever put more time into a game as much as I did with GT2 back in the day.

5 was ok because of shuffle races, 6 was fucking awful
>>
I remember as a teen in GT1, I had every Gold medal except for the longest race, the one that's 4 hours long. Tried that race, was first place the entire time, I even had a lap over the last cars.
Last lap, couple of hundred of meters left, a car overtook me and I end up 2nd place.
Stared at the screen for a whole minute, put down the pad, turned off the console, went outside, and never touched GT1 again in at least 5 years.

True. However, somehow I always felt that driving in the the first game was more dynamic. And as for GT2, while its soundtrack was generally inferior, the intro is still my favourite of all racing games:

Jazzy!

Music in Gran Turismo has always been classy. Yesterday I heard Chopin in GT6. So cool.

It's amazing how well these two games aged. Graphics still looks good and considering the amount of data in it it's impressive, the physics are still really good especially with a Dual Shock. Really a timeless classic.
>>
>>2811161
>hurr durr these 2 cars doesn't do that!

Nigger I played this shit in my childhood and there were plenty of cars that did this, I know for sure Mitsubishi GTO LM Edition had this (one of the fastest mitsubishi cars) because that was always my first expensive buy.
>>
Amazing games for the time, later GTs and Forza improved on it but I probably played GT1 the most.

>starting new game
>slowly work my way through all licences
>buy 2nd hand Toyota Supra
>keep racing again and again until it's fully modded
>getting that final racing upgrade with all the decals

Great days, might start another career for old times' sake

My GT2 cars were:

2nd hand Toyota Celina > Venturi Atlantique 400 GT > Suzuki Escudo

After Escudo I never looked back (Got cars I liked like Toyota GT one, my carfu)
>>
>>2811338
BTW I never knew how to get "flames" on the Toyota GT one, since you couldn't paint it or anything, was it an unlockable car or something? If so, which course?
>>
>>2811024

>4 Hours long

Nigga I can beat that sunnofabitch in less than an hour in that shitty Toyota Chaser LM they give you.

>>2811343

The '98 version of the GT-ONE had semi-flames on it, I guess...
>>
>>2811039

I kind of agree on both accounts. GT1 felt a bit more challenging to drive and rewarding when you master driving that car.

Figuring out how to drift the Corvette in arcade mode for starters, is very fun as fuck.

GT2, while not feeling the same as GT1, had a way better car roster and a lot of shit to do. It also had my favorite Le Mans cars (namely the R390 '98 and the Toyota GT-One, which I'm still pissed that they lost to the fucking BMWs).

I like both soundtracks though. Notably, I love the crap out of GT2's soundtrack. Just because of MOVE ASIDE AND LET THE MANGO FLEW
>>
>>2811024

It can't be worse as

>3 hour endurance race, around half-way in
>Pause and take a leak and get some chips
>Get back to your game
>Accidentally hit down and X, exiting your race

Man, fuck that shit.
>>
>>2811962

IIRC the GT-One with flames is a reward for clearing the Super License test in all Gold.

I could not perfectly do it as a kid.
>>
>3 hour endurance
>4 hour endurance

wtf are you talking about GT1 and 2? I haven't played any title newer than GT4 but there aren't any endurance longer than 2 hours in retro GT games, even the longest Laguna Seca, Grand Valley or Millenium in Rome endurances doesn't last more or much more than 2 hours, even if you're slow as fuck
>>
>>2812216
Yeah, I don't remember a 4 hour endurance either.
Think these guys are lying plebs.
>>
>>2812216

I may have bad memories of the Laguna Seca run I fucked up by exiting by accident. I do think it's 2 hours instead of 3 (the extra hour was because I had exited an hour and 20 minutes or so in).

I'm still asspained about it after all these years.

my all time favorite car in GT 2 and 3.
>keep engine stock
>super slick tires
>stiffen suspension and shocks
>crank on a bit more rear wing
>tighten the gears so she redlines 6th at 187mph (and juuust kiss that speed before having to brake for turn 1 at Grandvalley)
>destroy everything the AI can throw at you

Grandvalley and Grindelwald were home turf for me. My buddy and I used to hammer away at Grindelwald, trying to get the line just right to take the kinks at the top of the track flat out. I managed to get my time down into the 1:04's , and I felt like the love child of Michael Schumacher and Jesus.

In all honesty, I never understood the love for the Escudo. it was an absolute missile in a straight line, but I could never get her to turn the way I wanted. I was always faster in the R390 or TS020 (except on Rome, because that track is pure horsepower.)

....Time to dust off the ol' PS1 and have some fun.
>>
>>2812525
IM ONLY HAPPY WHEN IT RAINS
>>
>>2812602

Even though the FAQ I kinda followed preferred the 97 over the 98, look-wise I fucking love the 98. Also, I kinda wished the S2000 GT1 was real. One of my favorite 500+HP race cars (it was in the 500 HP class right, along with the always favorite RX-7 GT1 and the FTO LM?)

Also, Red Rock Valley was great (along with High Speed Ring, both my favorite original tracks). Grindelwald looked cozy as fuck, I should say.

I think the Escudo was well-loved because it was a gamebreaker 4WD car, but personally I'd rather see people getting crazy gud with other cars like the GT1s we like or the Speed 12.

That also being said, the Escudo Pikes Peak is fun for glitching through tracks like GT World or Laguna Seca.
>>
>>2812626

Meant Motorsports Land instead of GT World.

Also, fuck it. I'm getting me copies of GT2 and I'm gonna at least try to emulate them. Would be fun re-running all the license tests all over again. That and rare car hunting in the used lots.
>>
>GT 1&2
>FOV and camera sway options

>GT 3&4
>no FOV and camera sway options

Fucking WHY

Anyways I "speedrun" GT 1 licenses, but there's no credibility because there's no tech involved and no competition.
>>
>>2811001
>I used to try to flip my car
>>
I remember using some sort of Toyota Supra with racing shit all over it.
>>
>>2811019
6 felt more like an expansion to round 5's potential out. The car roster no longer had a randomness factor to it, making it the definitive compilation of PS2, PSP and PS3 era cars and being able to buy any car at will. The track roster is top notch and the best GT has ever been. I don't expect anyone to like the following things, but this is the first time a GT platinum trophy and license golds were easy enough for me to complete.
>>
>>2812501
This. They did at least pick great tracks for GT1, but Moon Over the Castle is GOAT until GT5, holy shit that cover sucked
>>
>>2812843
kek, thats exactly what I would do.
>>
>>2811152

In gt4 thought it is a very car to handle on even wide corners.
>>
>>2812890
That was actually a pain point with me in GT6: it was too easy and too short.
I had the plat trophy, and 100% game completion 30 days after release. 95% of tests I golded first try.
In comparison, it took me almost 2 years to finally plat GT5 (still my rarest, and proudest trophy). Some of 5's tests took me days to gold.
And dumping endurance races was inexcusable. Longest race is the 24 minutes of Le Mans, with accelerated fuel and tire consumption? Fuck off. Completely kills the strategy behind hard tires that can last 25-30 laps.

I do agree with the awesome selection of tracks and cars though. That was tits. Though I still miss the AE86 race car from 2...
>>
>>2813684
"We don't trust our players to have the determination or attention span to handle endurance races, or any amount of difficulty"
To me what you describe is yet another facet of what I consider fundamentally wrong with modern gaming. Developers or publishers don't respect the player anymore. They don't trust the player is able, or willing, to actually learn a game, spend more than the basic minimum of time in it. They don't trust the player is actually able to learn, and can handle non-trivial challenges, has an interest in handling them.
So, no matter how "serious" or challenging the original game was, The present iterations are simplified, smoothed out feel good intermissions, until the next pack of DLC ...

Which version of the game did you have (US-TC, JP, PAL)? Because in the US Version I played, getting all golds on the Super License got you the 1999-Spec GT-ONE (Pic Related).

Also, goddamn I love GT2, especially when you could get good enough and had enough money to troll lower-end races races with souped-up shit-boxes & kei-cars.
>>
Loved gt1, but gt2 didn't really have much improvement in my eyes. I also think the soundtrack was worse (I own the pal versions). But still, these games were revolutionary even with the no damage licensing issues.
>>
>>2813708
As someone who loves Gran Turismo but can't gold anything other than GT6, can't drive manual and need ABS, I'm perfectly fine with endurance as long as they have a mid race save feature. They added it at some point but I can't remember which game. I know GT6 had championship post-race saving. As long as they have these QoL type features, I can handle endurance races for the most part.
>>
Why didn't we get the GOAT Japanese version soundtrack?
>>
I love GT 1 and 2

Are the PS2 titles any good compared to GT2?
>>
>>2814339

I don't get why everyone praises the japanese soundtrack so much. I would listen to Stone Temple Pilots or Garbage any day instead of that generic ambient trash
>>
>>2812602
Maybe it's just me, or maybe it's because I turned my ride height down to zero, but I've never had one bit of trouble with turning the Escudo.

GT5 added them in the 2.0 patch.
It's honestly the only reason I was able to A-Spec the 24h races.

3 is kinda barebones compared to 2, and only has a fraction of the cars, but you can carry over some stuff into 4 which has even more content than 2.

3 and 4 trade blows with each other whenever it's discussed which is the better game. One does something better than the other and so on. In a nutshell:

GT3 is a leap to show off the PS2, but they were able to include only so many cars and tracks due to all new assets. Good, but barebones.

GT4 got a bit try hard and turned the driving physics into boats and tanks pre-tuning. Graphics are photorealistic more or less, but took some of the vibrancy and excitement out. The content is absolutely huge though, but dealership is now randomly dependant on a calendar rotation which kind of sucks sometimes.

Play GT3 if you liked it when Gran Turismo was still simple. Play GT4 for content and car porn.

>>
>>2814090

Most likely a Pirated copy of the US version. My PS1 has been stolen sadly along with my disc collection (including a broken copy of GT1 a neighbor accidentally sat on, still pisses me off to this day). That and I'm probably remembering things wrong as well (upon doing further research, it's a random award at GT World League, and if I can recall my save I got it out of luck first try, unlike how I had to repeatedly fuck up the endurance races by accidentally exiting and got both the Evo VI and the Impreza several times on a retry before I got the Cerbera and the R390 97)

That out of the way, fuck yeah it was fun to shit all over lower end races. That and fucking over GT2's weird car restrictions (which allows you to go enter say, an Impreza rally car in the Muscle Car league).

Quick, /gt/! What was your go-to starter car?
>>
>>2816428
Whatever I get from license tests. It actually annoys me that 5 and 6 force you to buy a car.
>>
>>2816620

Had I been good enough as a kid I'd shoot for that too.

The easy answer is a cheapo Civic 3-Door SI, my personal answer is usually a Prelude or an RX-7 Infini-III.

In GT1 it was fun to stumble upon the Supra which you can tune the fuck out of. Handles pretty bad but holy fuck is it fast.
>>
I think I had an Audi TT, which I upgraded into a touring car. You could not do that much after GT2. My tune was set for drag racing and I'd blow the AI away at the start and make sure nobody passed me. I think I spent too much time playing Gran Turismo. I don't find getting liscenses and playing slow cars fun anymore. I think when you keep buying the games its always a set back.

Car makers often put strict conditions on damage models in games, when licensing their cars. Usually the requirements are either a complete lack of a damage model, only statistical damage, or only bodywork damage that will not destroy the overall shape of the cars (i.e. scratches and dents are fine, completely deformed or lost body parts are not). It's one of the primary reasons why games like Destruction Derby, Crashday or Wreckfest use unlicensed models, that are either purely fictional, or only loosely resemble real cars.

For game developers an indestructible car instantly causes problems when dealing with wall riding and aggressive passing maneuvers, slamming opponents into the wall.

Some games, like Trackmania, approach the wall riding problem by giving the player some severe slowdown. In games with a different focus though, wall riding is a very viable strategy and very often criticized.

There are no good solutions dealing with crash-to-pass behavior

why are you holding the cars sideways? Aren't you faster if the wheels roll in the direction you want to go, instead of sliding? That's been my experience with cars, anyway.

In like 1997 maybe, but every modern driving game has some sort of damage model.

I remember in Forza 2 (2007) you could lose bumpers and shit on all the cars in the game. Granted, you can't completely demolish a car, but it's far from just a few scratches and dents.

It probably comes with the settings I have on PCSX-R at the moment.

That got me thinking, I kinda think GT1 has the looks better than 2 since most cars have this weird bluish Vaseline sheen but 1 didn't.

But yeah, back in the day GT and GT2 used to be the pinnacle of great graphics for its time.

losing bumbers still maintains the overall shape of the car and keeps it in working condition. Very little has changed in that regard. Stuff like NASCAR Racing or Destruction Derby shows what damage model games back then were capable of, but not allowed. Wreckfest nowadays shows what damage model games are capable of, and Forza shows how little they're allowed.
>>
>>2821002
In my opinion:
Rage Racer & Ridge Racer Type 4 had better environment design (ideas) and detail
Need For Speed High Stakes had infinitely more car detail. Interior, chassis and reflection chrome
>>
>>2821919
>working condition
Except damage affects performance and you CAN disable a car in Forza.

Also, in GRID 2 you can seriously fuck up a car to the point where it's hardly recognizable.

What matters is the specific manufacturers and the amount the developer is willing to pay.
>>
>>2822016
Oh yeah, and before you ask, yes I have palyed NCG/Wreckfest and I know full that you can't do that kind of damage with licensed vehicles. But that's not to say that damage isn't possible or can't be very extensive with licensed cars, especially in this day and age.
>>
>>2822016
Can someone license savvy explain what happened with Honda and Ferrari? Their cars are starting to appear in games with damage AND cops together.
>>
>>2822020
>I know full that you can't do that kind of damage with licensed vehicles

>that's not to say that damage isn't possible or can't be very extensive with licensed cars
That was besides the point, we're talking primarily about GT1 and 2. The original post was >>2821158
>your car is made of pure diamonds

>especially in this day and age
That happily clashes with your previous statement about Wreckfest. The problem is still as relevant as it was decades ago, that license restrictions prevent the application of full damage models, although they're possible to simulate. That the way it's executed has changed, is just a technicality. Then again, being technically correct is what all this is about, isn't it?
>>
yuro here, it's 9am where I live. That cozy feel when you get to work, open up, make some fresh coffee and look up this thread. It's been like a little treat every morning this week.

I've restarted GT1 so many times, but I usually do the licence trials and rarely go further than the first cup or two. Once you get to the maxed out GTO its kinda not fun anymore, feels like playing bumper cars at 10 times speed.

But licence tracks are the shit. Again, I dont know if comfy is a buzzword on this board but there is nothing comfier. Racing games need more sunset tracks, that track (someone will provide the name I hope) in GT1 where you start on a slight downhill and then there is a wide 180 degree turn that leads uphill into the forest. It's pure sex.

Also funnily enough, I played through GT4 with GT1 jap music in the background. Jazzy shit works so well with gt4, whose OST is fucking shit.

While there's nothing wrong with playing at native resolution, it can be helpful to have the webm larger, an integer multiple of the native resolution. It reduces the number of visual details in the image blocks, which means fewer artifacts.

Arcade mode has the 67' Corvette, Dodge Viper among the un-tuned cars is a rapetrain and you have the japanese cars with 900+HP, good luck to control them in other tracks than Test Course though. For GT2, I usually went with a used Toyota Celica 4WD. Some quick grinding later, and it has over 300HP and can hit 160 easy. From there I usually save up the money for an Audi TT Coupe, and use that to save up the cash for the RUF CTR2 Sport, then the Escudo. With those cars, I can complete a good sized chunk of all races, only buying new cars for specific races as needed.

TOCA World Touring Cars had a great damage model, all sorts of things like bumpers, windows, and panels would get damaged and smashed during races, and it'd affect the car performance too. It blew my mind back then.

I still consider NFS3 to be the be all end all NFS and quite possibly the finest racing game I've ever played. This was the last game me and my childhood best friend played a lot of together before he moved away and I never saw the guy again.

I kept meaning to get into NFS:HS, but it lost me when they added the stupid damage system and added a licensed soundtrack instead of the kickass original tunes. I picked up a ps1 copy of it recently so I might give it another whirl.
