Welcome to the Retro Game Gauntlet, gentlemen: http://s3kr.it/gauntlet.html
Start at NES, and work through in the following order:
NES
SNES
GB/GBC
Megadrive/Genesis
Turbografx16
DOS
NeoGeo
GBA
Commodore 64
Playstation 1
You have three days (or as many days as you like--it's all cool) to complete the game without assistance (each game gets three days, though RPGs are allowed a week due to length).
Select your system here:
http://s3kr.it/gauntlet.html
You can also do it manually if you don't trust the random number generator:
http://s3kr.it/systems/
Rules (follow if you want, or not--no biggy):
1) Savestates are allowed ONLY for the purpose of taking screenshots and ONLY if your emulator/game in question does not have a pause function.
2) Rerolls are allowed under the following conditions:
-The game you get requires some sort of hardware functionality that cannot be accurately emulated to complete (eg, Boktai)
-The game would otherwise require cheats, hacks, or alteration of the software to complete due to a bug (eg, Cheetahmen II)
For games that have a high score or no end, the rule is
>if no high score has been established, set a goal and beat it
>if you're playing something another anon already has a high score on, beat their high score
>if you are playing extended rpgs/pokemon/whatever you get a week (Depending on the game: needs to be asked in thread)
AND BRING ME SCREENSHOTS PARKER
NEW RULES/GUIDELINES TO POSTING IN THE GAUNTLET THREADS:
-Do not post screenshots every other screen, make them few and meaningful
-Do not start a new thread before current one bump limit is exceeded
Oh shit this is finally back?
Rolled Zombie Nation, lets see how it goes
>>2809169
We had a thread just one week ago, but it died with only 10 answers.
>>2809180
these die a lot with few responses since all the posters are too busy playing games.
>Dragon Ball Dragon Mistery
Dem hitboxes man...
Has anyone eber made it all the way through the Gauntlet?
Furthest I've gotten is Gen/MD
Fuck yeah the Gauntlet is back.
>>2809697
I feel like you either get tired of it, get a shitty game, or both. The chances of getting worthwhile games the whole way through is so low after all.
>>2809838
or you run out of time and give up.
I'll probably lose because I have a lot of shit to do this week, but I'm gonna try anyway
>>2810014
Got my first game over after beating one level and getting to a second boss. It isn't the best NES game but at least it's fun.
I guess this would work better if it used the lightgun, I feel it's a little hard to avoid taking damage when there are enemies at both sides of the screen.Am I the only one playing?
>>2810071
I want to give it another go, but I'm out of town for a day so I can't well start it up right now.
Noice

I finally beat the game last night after a lot of failed attempts. After like two Game Overs I discovered that killing more than 95% of the enemies in a level gave you an extra life. The game had no fucking music except for some guy playing the same sax melody for 5 seconds on every level, and two bosses didn't even have a background
Using this, and thanks to the RNG (I'm actually not sure if it's RNG or not), which gave me a LOT of extra lifes, I was able to beat the game, but for some reason retroarch wasn't saving my screenshots, so I don't have proof I beat that shit.
After this uninteresting blog shitpost, I got this game
Sounds like a shit game
Commodore 64 should be the ultimate challenge for people who think they're hot shit at video games.
This shit's easy.
Dammit Ronald you can't just go around showing off your magic bag in public parks and shit c'mon.

Okay I can run on the ceiling apparently this game is seriously not bad.
>>2811060
Aaaand I did it. I also just discovered there's a translation. The game isn't bad so maybe I'll play it some day, but for now I gotBarbie - Ocean Discovery.Just the kind of game I feared.
>>2814478
>>2814517
It might not be that bad but it looks like shit
>>2816554
I decided to give it a go. Turns out it can hardly be considered a game. At least it's over I guess.
Since I'm supposed to have three days to beat a game, and I have a test on thursday, I'm going to start the next game on friday. The game I got isLast Action Hero
I have never heard of this game before, is it good?
Jesus fuck.
Well, I ended up getting distracted and not beating M.C. Kids within three days, but I'm glad I got to try it out.
Re-rolled again and got this. Sounds interesting.
>>2816645
That's one of those first-person old dungeon crawling games, right? I think my brother had a copy as a kid and I want to say you can mix spells to make new ones?
>>2817194
I'm curious if that can even be beaten.
>>2816645
Color me surprised here
>>2816619
I liked that movie. Is the game based on it?
How the hell do you make this jump on Lost Levels 3-4? I know I've got past it once but I've used 3 continues trying to get past it

Hidden block, babe.
Finished Wai Wai World 2 today. I was expecting Japanese weirdness, and I got it, but I also got a fun little crossover game in the process. It's like a Konami greatest hits-meets-Parodius-style game filled with auto-scrolling action platforming and shoot 'em up sections. You play as some dude named Rickle who punches a little laser thing, but can switch between various Konami characters if you get a power-up in the platforming stages. All the characters play differently, but I mostly went with Fuuma and Bill.
Neat little game, and not too difficult. I'm excited to try out the first one. Also, there's an English patch out there, although I wouldn't say it's a necessity to play the game.
Rolled Super Widget for SNES next. No clue what that will be like.
Not following the Gauntlet proper, but I've finished a NES game (rolled Mario Bros--quite fun, found a portal and skipped half the game). On GB now and I somehow got Pokemon Red first roll, which was pretty good.
Super Widget is exactly what I'd feared. It's a Super Nintendo platformer about that little purple environmentally-conscious shape-shifting alien from the 90s that not even the most desperate nostalgia-raping company will attempt to reboot.
Not that far in yet, and it's not terrible, but it does have that common SNES platformer issue where the screen feels cropped off and you can barely see what's around you. The levels are also very samey and seem to lag when you transform.
I'll try this out. I have work and school, so I'm just gonna play it till I beat it, regardless of how long it takes me. I've never played a Mega Man game before, so which Robot should I start with?
>>2822956
Running Toad Man's level. Finally got past that stupid Robo Snail. Feels good man.
>>2823097
Godspeed, anon. Never tried 4 but I've been meaning to go through all the Megaman games in a row with my maniac Megaman friend.
>>2809135
never heard of it before
i hope its not too bad
"BAD ending" is BEST ending.
>>2809697
I got through it once. Had a really good roll, only one game that was shitty and unplayable, everything else was doable, last game was a special treat, rolled Yoshi's Story. I did a second run later and got all the way to C64/Amiga, got a text adventure that I couldn't figure out even with help from the thread.
I noticed the rules changed, Commodore 64 used to have an Amiga alt option, and PS1 had an N64 alt option. I know N64 emulation is wonky but there's nothing wrong with having the option. If you're going to update the rules, why have GBA in there still?
>>2824214
OP here; I just copied the rules off the site
gg no re
As much as I dislike this little purple alien and the increasingly dumb-looking things he transforms into, I found myself enjoying sections of this game. It's not a good game, but it had some potential. The jumps are mostly set up so you have to constantly correct them in mid-air the way a floatier platformer would work, but Widget's jumps aren't floaty and many of the platforms were super tiny and it just feels very bizarre. Some of the power ups are cool, but the guy is useless without them.
Next is Road Rash. Didn't even know that was a Gameboy game.
