Dear emulatorfags,
What's your perfect keyboard config?
Do you play WASD or arrow keys?
>>
WASD + numpad, i play mostly games with few buttons though
>>
I've been using arrow keys for movement and ASDF for actions for every emulator when I use a keyboard for as far as I can remember. In the case of SNES I'd always map A=A, B=F, X=S, Y=D, L=E, R=R, Start=Enter, Select=Space, occasionally switching keys when appropriate, like making A=F for any RPG that primarily uses A. WSAD only really makes sense to me if you're using a mouse.
>>
WASD + arrow keys + shift for shoulders

Exception: N64 = arrow keys as c-buttons. This really helps for strafing and camera controls (and let's you do the famous "spinning throw" digitally if you hold a direction and rotate through the camera buttons on some games)
>>
>>2805450
i use E,S,D,F for d pad and J,K,L,I for buttons B for start and V for select. comfy as fuck. if you need L and R use A and ;
>>
I beat Super Mario 64 in 2008 using the arrow keys and insert delete home end page up page down for the buttons.

That was for over a decade the way I played emulated games on pc.

C'mon, man.
>>
iBuffalo SNES is less than $15 and feels just as good as original hardware once you add some pennies to it.

For $30 you can get the 8bitDO pad which is bluetooth.

I don't like messing with keyboard for action SNES games since it's too many buttons to keep track of and hit combos quickly.

I do play gameboy and nes games on the keyboard occasionally, pretty standard arrow keys + z,x,shift,enter
>>
Using the original ZSNES button layout:

Arrow keys, plus
INSERT = X
DELETE = Y
HOME = A
END = B
PGUP = L
PGDOWN = R

Can play most games, other than fighters, one handed, it's nice.
>>
Holy shit, you guys actually play with the keyboard!? Now I know why collector faggots look down on us.
>>
>>2805450

I emulate on a wii and use a gamecube controller. It's great
>>
>>2805510
This looks intersting, like Vim-keys, I will try that!
>>
I don't keyboard. I use a 6 buttons controller, and Emulation Station is stupidly designed for only SNES stuff, making configuration impractical.

Never used a keyboard when emulating, just use a controller. There are lots of options. DS3 and DS4 are my favorite but there are some SNES pad clones out there.

If I had to use keyboard I would definitely use wasd. I don't think I could wrap my head around using my right hand to control movement.
>>
I use:

A=Select
S=Start
D=B
F=A
G=X
V=Y
TAB=L
Q=R

Arrowkeys stand in for the D-Pad. Soon though, I'm getting a dedicated gaming controller.
>>
Neither. This is gonna sound confusing, but here goes:

For all emulators, I set up the D-pad like this:

Up. . . . . . . . . . . . T
Down . . . . . . . [Space]
Left. . . . . . . . . . . F
Right. . . . . . . . . . H

All other keys are on the number pad.

I set up NES keys, for example, like so:

B. . . . . . . . . . . [0/Ins]
A. . . . . . . . . . . [./Del]
Select. . . . . .[3/Pg Dn]
Start. . . . . . . . .[Enter]

On my Android phone, however, which has a slide out QWERTY keyboard, the keys are indeed WASD because I'm pressing the keys with my thumbs, like a gamepad. Works a fuckin' dream.
>>
I want to use WASD + Numkeys.
But then I get unsure.

WASD + JKLIUOP is not very functional.

arrow keys for D-pad, probably just a carryover habit from the 90's
z,x,c,v for the face buttons (90% of the time).

The most important principle to me is to map 'c' and 'v' to the two most frequently used buttons (like jump and shoot), since they are accessed by your middle and index finger.

The other buttons get mapped depending on the game and especially how they are used with other buttons. f,g,b are close enough to zxcv to be useful for twitch oriented uses. 's' and 'd' can be useful if you need to hold L/R with one finger while doing something with your index finger (like Contra III). Ctrl + Numpad0 can also be a nice setup for L/R depending on how they need to be used.

Pic related. I keep a folder with autohotkey remappings for individual games.
>>
Q=Select
T=Start
X=B
B=A
U=X
L=Y
W=L
M=R

And arrowkeys
>>
>>2805450
A-S-D-C (comfy!) + Arrow Keys
>>
>>2805450
I use arrow keys and ZXCVASDF
but i just use a controller, and will use joy to key for games with out controller support.
>>

buttons, select/start, movement

>>
>>2805450
A genesis six-button controller.

If I can't, I usually just use arrow keys and the z/x area of the keyboard for buttons depending on the console.

D-PAD UP = W
D-PAD LEFT = A
D-PAD RIGHT = D
D-PAD DOWN = S
L = Q
R = E
SELECT = C
START = V
A = NUMPAD 6
B = NUMPAD 5
X = NUMPAD 8
Y = NUMPAD 4
FAST FORWARD = NUMPAD ENTER
The best setup for all SNES games.
>>
>>2805450
Depends. Usually arrow keys for movement + Z X C, but if I need to button mash really fast I switch to WASD for movement and arrow keys for face buttons, since I can only mash fast with my right hand.
>>
>>2805537
I play better on keyboard than any shitty collector with a rare controller. I buy games too

>>
>>2805450
On Snes
arrows for d-pad
WASD for face buttons
Q and E for L and R

GBA:
arrows for D-pad
QW for corner buttons
AS for A and B

PSX: qw for L1/2
rt for R1/2
sedf for face buttons
arrows for D-pad

I just use a controller.
>>
>>2805450

I use a SNES controller (with a USB adapter) because I'm a reasonable person. There is no perfect keyboard configuration for console games.
>>
>>2806146
I use a usb SNES or Saturn pad now, but using the analog stick on the 360 didn't change the games up that much and was infinitely better than using a keyboard.

I play with a chinese made usb snes controller I got off ebay for $5. Feels flimsy and plasticy but at least it's not a keyboard. I think I might buy that $12 buffalo one when I get some cash, some dude recommended it in a gbatemp thread.

every idiots knows that console games are meant to be played on controllers. if you play with keyboard you are autistic idiot. secondly everyone also knows that the d-pad of the xbox 360 sucks, so stop being a poorfag and buy a ps3 or even ps4 controller.
but playing with a cheap 20$ xbox360 controller is still superior than playing on a keyboard. console games, most of snes games are not meant to be played with keybords you ill people!!! get a grip of your heads
>>

right, but why not a snes usb replica? i totally agreed with you that people hate themselves who play snes games with keyboard, but they could at least have enogh self worth to invest in a snes usb replica rather than that.
>>
>>2806948
yes, is still better than a fucking keyboard for a snes game you fucking autist. no one plays snes games on a keyboard that's like playing soccer with a basket ball
>>
>>2806949
I was implying that if you hate yourself enough to use something like that keyboard controller combo you might as well get something truly terrible like that. Kinda got lost somewhere along the way though...
>>
>>2806948
i recommended it to poorfags like you who have only 20$ for a controller

b= alt+135

select=alt+112

>>
>>2806595
Maybe because you didn't need that much precision. I have played 2D games with a 360 pad and it's fucking shit even compared to a keyboard.
>>
>>2806967
yeah i agree. it sucks. and analog stick is just wrong. that's why i switched to my ps3 controller with SCP. But I still think an usb snes replica controller is the sweetest and i really would like to own one (a good one). keyboard? never, only for keyboard games like mass effect
>>
>>2806969
Maybe because you play shit with too much buttons. For mame stuff with 2/3 buttons keyboard works like a charm for me. If i want to play SNES or Saturn i'd just play the real thing.
>>
>>2806978
yeah it really depends on what you wanna play. i guess it's okay in your case, since it's arcade mame controllers are really expensive and arcade is more like a keyboard.
>>
>>2805450

DPAD: arrows
A: D
B:S
Y:A
X:Q
L:Z
