I just played through Princess Tomato In The Salad Kingdom and had surprisingly good time with it. Does /vr/ know more "storybook" games like it that aren't Shadowgate, Deja Vu and Uninvited which I'm already aware of?

You mean point and click adventure games?
Waxworks is pretty good.
Paper Mario?
Phoenix Wright. The first one is retro, isn't it?
Visual Novels
It's a huge genre in Japan
The Famicom had a lot of detective games with a similar interface, there are probably fan translations for a few of them.

Original versions of the games were on the GBA, so they're still not retro.

He's probably confusing Phoenix Wright for Zack Hunter
Tombs & Treasure
I've been playing this one lately, just getting started but I'm enjoying it.
It has a top-down view like an RPG, but it plays like an adventure game, no actual battles so far, there's some dungeon crawling though (in fact I'm stuck in one atm).
It has an english translation patch.
The first chapter was almost identical to the TV series, but on the 2nd chapter there's already some differences. Anyway you can play it even if you never watched the series (although I do recommend the series as well)
