Let's think back at the game covers of yesteryear and admit to ourselves that they have barely anything to do with the game they contain.
>pic related
Zombies don't peak behind doors in RE2 and they don't have slit pupils either.
>>2791262
Obligatory post.
>Axel's shirt is white
>his bandana is red
>Blaze isn't dressed like this
>there are no snipers in the game
>you don't fight dudes with hockey masks
>none of the enemies have guns
>none of the buildings are on fire
>Where's Adam?
>>2791282
Talk about fucking misleading. Can't believe I forgot about Phalanx.
>>2791262
They do if you try to get into scenario B from A m8
>>2791286
No they don't.
>>2791285
>old man is supposed to be a dwarf
>barbarian has black hair
>amazon has brown hair and wears red
>you never see a full sized dragon
That's not where you fight this monster, that's not the party you fight it with, and Marle doesn't use fire magic in the game.
Also, why the fucking fire extinguisher, and why is there a town in the background of the mountain.
>>2791262
Why would you assume that's a zombie?
>>2791486
Nevermind; I apologize for interrupting an autism thread.
>>2791486
>Why would you assume that's a zombie?
The fingers and overall look of the face. And there are no lizard enemies in RE2 either like the Hunters in RE1. It's got Lickers instead in their place and they not only not have eyes they have claws instead of fingers.
>>2791491
>I apologize for interrupting an autism thread.
>autism
No.
>>2791501
I mean, why wouldn't you just assume it was a different t-virus mutation?
The RE2 cover is a typical B horror movie cover. The idea is to give you a general feel without showing you the whole actual monster.
The "door-peeking" is just to remind RE1 fans of that scare you got when there were monsters immediately after the door-opening/room loading animation.
>>2791523
Now who's being autistic?
>>2791532
When in Rome...
The cover shows nothing that's actually in the game.
>>2791371
The art depicts a level that was dummied out. It's added as an optional dungeon in the DS port. I'm sure that's a backpack or something similar.
>>2791562
>The fuck is that game
It's a rail shooter in which you control a robot or mecha, entirely without music. That's why it's called Silent Iron. Came out 2003 or 04.
There aren't many videos available.

>Zombies don't peak behind doors in RE2
Do you not remember the part in Leon A(Maybe it was B?) when the zombies bust through the door as you're just about to go through it?
I think the blowgun was in the same room.
It's the place outside near the helicopter.
>>2791294
i remember seeing this cover as a kid and thinking the shinra building was some huge boss
>>2792938
it does look like alexander
>>2791262
It always looked like that zombie is missing half of his face because somebody shot it, to me.
>>2791262
I always thought that was william birkin on the cover
>>2791262
>>2791278
>>2791371
Honestly I'll chalk this up to artistic liberties and things possibly changing during development.
Might not be 100% accurate to an ingame situation but the cover gives you a good idea about what kind of game you're looking at. Streets of Rage shows a character fighting punks and thugs on a street, not entiry like it happens ingame, but it gives you an idea
It's like the cover to Doom, there isn't a gun which looks like this, demons can't actually grab you or climb ledges, and the only demon with a gun arm is gigantic and wouldn't fit in this image, but it's dramatization, it shows the hero in a heated battle with the spawns of hell, it also hints at co-op multiplayer in the background. It's a dramatic image meant to convey to you what sort of game it is.
>>2791270
>>2791282
I'll give you these, the artist (who also wasn't very good) was obviously just given a vague description about Megaman.
The Europeon cover is infinitely better, it looks like a classic movie poster and characters are correctly depicted.
As for Phalanx, who fucking knows what the idea was here.
>>2791562
"When in Rome, do as the Romans do"
It's a really old and common saying.
He's basically saying "when in spergville, be an autist to fit in"
>>2791270
See, isn't this a MUCH better cover?
>>2791262
>not posting the PAL cover
Literally no skeletons anywhere.
>>2794709
>As for Phalanx, who fucking knows what the idea was here.
shock advertising, like most of 90s ads
>>2797284
There's shock advertising, then there's "What?" advertising.
I don't think anyone was shocked or offended at Phalanx, either they saw it and maybe dismissed it as something that didn't interest them, or they picked it up, read the box and wondered what the hell is with the cover.
Or if you actually were familiar with the game, it might be even more confusing because you know exactly what the game is and the cover is mystery to you.
I haven't played Phalanx but as I understand it's some kind of space shooter, did the devs ever comment on the choice of cover art?
>>2797294
Ah, wait, I found excerpt from an interview.
>Phalanx was just another Super NES sidescrolling shooter that we all probably would have forgotten by now - if not for the inexplicable shot of the bearded geezer strummin' a banjo on the game's box cover. Why the old guy? The problem is that all the game art looked alike at the time - monsters or spaceships or something," explains Matt Guss, head of the advertising company behind the Phalanx campaign. "We wanted to create shock value so somone would have to pick the game up. We called it the 'Heavy Huh?!' factor." Art director Keith Campbell says they did the photo shoot themselves, hiring a model for the role of the 80-something hayseed. "I'd used him before as Santa Claus on an album-cover shoot," Guss adds. "I remember him coming into the studio, and I though the poor guy was gonna die right there on the stage. I think he'd had a stroke earlier - not earlier that day, but in the past . . . We stuck a banjo in his hands, and I think we stuck a spaceship behind his head that he was supposed to be staring at in wonder, sort of a Star Wars-come-to-the-Ozarks kind of thing." You gotta admit Guss' cover concept was mighty effective. After all, we're still talking about the game 10 years after its release. Heavy, huh? If you're too young to remember this game, don't worry Kemco's rereleasing it for the Game Boy Advance.
>>2797294
yep, that's what I meant, in a way the "wtf was that?" advertising is a similar tactic as shock advertising
>>2797296
I hated the level where someone left a spoon in their cup
>>2799270
That was piss easy compared to the non-microwaveable plastic level.
>>2791297
who is this semen demon?
>>2791551
>Phoenix
the stamp of shit
>>2797262
PAL RE2 looks so much cooler than NTSC. Less is more
NTSC wins for RE3 though
>>2791278
It took me until last week to finally realize that the big bald guy on SoR 2's cover was Max.
>>2791262
Wait that's a door and not someone's leg?
>>2797262
Looks like they were trying to ripoff Zombie 2.
>>2797262
I really like that box art. It's better than the US version. It's simple and only uses three colors, but that's what makes it good. Biohazard 2 (Jap) has the same box art as Euro Resident Evil 2, by the way. Both box arts aren't very representative of the game though, one had lizard guy, the other had skeleton man.
It's interesting how US covers tend to have 3D renders and guns while EU and JP covers are generally more simplistic and feature drawings and abstract things.
>>2794709
That gun on the Doom cover actually was going to be in the game, it was just scrapped. I think it's in some of the betas.
>>2791262
basically all NES covers and 80% of SNES covers.
>>2791294
that's the ugly american cover, isn't it?
a classic ff cover should always have just the white with the logo on it.
>corporate design
>>2800905
>>2797262
It reminds me less of a skeleton and more of this fairly decomposed zombie variety.
>>2800961
>>2800962
>>2800974
Forgot pic related?
Anyway, a lot of covers are pretty in this thread are pretty representive of the game. It might be bad art or not exactly as shown on the cover, but you definitely get the idea from most of these covers. Mega Man is a guy who shoots, Chrono Trigger a medieval fantasy adventure, Resident Evil horror game and Streets of Rage a beat'em up.
>>2791278
>Made with the exact same clipart as Fatal Fury 3 on SNES
>>2800678
>NTSC wins for RE3 though
I respectfully disagree.
>>2799276
y'all some aluminum covered china plate fools
>>2800008
It's a dude.
>>2800914
I've seen all the alpha and beta material released and leaked, there really isn't anything that quite matches it in looks.
There's a few pickup sprites with a shape vaguely like it but there isn't anything from the first person perspective that matches the rounded off boxy shape.
>>2801571
>dullahan.jpg
>>2801289
Now that I see it again, it does look pretty darn awesome. PAL PS1 games had some great box art.
>>2800678
I know it's not retro but since were on the topic of Resident Evil, look at RE4. Europe really got the better box arts for RE games.
>>2791294
This clover always make think they turned an RPG into a hack&slash beat em up
>>2802029
4's art is cooler, but way more misleading.
>>2802104
>misleading
How? The Euro covers show an abstract/stylized depiction of Dr. Salvador, one of the notable enemies in the game.
I guess maybe it gives the impression that it's more horror than it actually is, but I don't think it's THAT egregious, the game is still aiming for a horror-like atmosphere.
I think it's a much more visually striking and interesting cover than just photoshopping in an array of characters in that typical cheap modern day Hollywood arrangement.
>>2802029
See also: REmake and 0.
For the love of god, this cover. I honestly think this is why many people may have not played the game back in the day, due to the shitty cover for the US release. When looking at all the covers to all the games why would you choose this odd looking one out of all the classics? TGL is still a favorite on the NES for me.
>>2793890
>Some of the ascetics are off
back to your desert.
>>2802029
The PAL cover for the Wii version is absolutely glorious.
>>2800961
ah, I remember this art style being popular in tech manuals and corporate literature too
>>2802946
I love how much that looks like a sinister drag queen when viewed as a thumbnail.

I wanna play the cool game with robots not that yugi-oh crap.
>>2797296
If I didn't know what kind of game Zillion was, I would assume it would be some microwave simulator.
>Cover has Billy and Jimmy brofisting each other before taking on the bad guys.
>One of them is the bad guy in the NES version
>They never even wore bandannas in the actual games.
>>2791270
There are many misleading things about Mega Man 2's boxart. Mega Man doesn't wear a motorcycle helmet, there is no orb that looks like the Death Star. Mega Man doesn's use a phaser and Dr. Light doesn't fondle Crash Man's shiny metal ass. Their faces are also off. The only thing it does right is that you shoot robots.
Seeing how the thread developed, can anyone post a cover that they think actually did represent the game then?
