IV.

Had a really interesting setting, and a battle system that wasn't slow as hell.

II would be my second favorite. The shaman system is neat. I just wish there was more going on. There's also no "perfect" version. The GBA version has a great romhack that rebalances things, but it's stuck with the shit translation. The SNES version has a retranslation, but the pacing of the game is such that you have to stop and grind occasionally.

It has the best Nina. Ryu's dragon powers are borderline useless, as they use all your MP.

Very flawed game, and the setting is a bit generic, but I understand why people like it. It probably has the best cast out of all of them.

Is 1 worth playing? I have 1 and 2. I've started 1, but it seems a bit ehhhhhhhhh as far as SNES JRPGs go. Does 2 get better?

I have both for the SNES (none for anything else).
>>
>>2790107

>>
>>2790107
1 is bleh, 2 is an improvement, 3 is REALLY slow at the beginning but picks up, 4 is one of the best JRPGs of the decade
>>
>>2789786
At least he's not like the Vfags, who always derail the thread into dumb arguments about why their pos game is the best.
>>
I can never decide. I know it's not the overall best, but I always stubbornly preferred BOFIII for the early 'youth' portion with all of the thieving shenanigans. BOFIV is easily the most refined, however, and therefore is the most enjoyable both in story and gameplay. The first two have my nostalgia goggles, though.
>>
>>2789690
I prefer 1, because Mrbl3 eliminating random encounters made the game totally tolerable. 3 is my second favorite because the gene system is fun to experiment with. 2 and 4 I'm pretty ambivalent about. 2 has a better setting but combat is fucked. 4 has a shit setting, but the combat is better. Never played 5 because being punished for using the dragon mechanic was like a big 'Fuck you' to me.
>>
My favorite is the one that forces you to play through hell with a gay underleveled monkey as your sole party member.
>>
>>2790195
I would've liked the shenanigans portion if any of the characters were interesting, and Ryu wasn't a punk ass little bitch.

It also has the absolute worst Nina.

4's gameplay with 3's soundtrack and more 'cohesive' story structure that is actually completed would have made Breath of Fire into a masterpiece title

don't get me wrong both games are great but they all had their flaws. 4 was rushed in the end and the story was to be quite honest a little bad in that there was little incentive for Ryu's journey. Most of it was ushered on by the other character's motives. The part where you find out what Yuna did to Elina I felt was extremely underplayed, because I know for something like that the writers could have built the player to be more emotionally invested to give a shit but instead you just feel a little sad and go "welp time to fight Fou Lou I guess" Not to mention the so-and-so ost in comparison to the more memorable tracks from 3, from 4 I can probably only recognize one or two tracks where as 3 had a lot more memorable tunes.

3 obviously had the lesser gameplay, and the story is nothing to write home about but at least it was more invested than 4's was. Nina got sick in a desert and you had to kill a camel (your only guide back to the starting point in case you got lost as shit) just to keep her alive, I'd say that's worth something. Not to mention Teepo at the Garden of Eden and the Garland fight at the end of the child arc, a lot of scenes revolved around Ryu whereas a lot of 4's scenes focused a little more about the surrounding characters while Ryu just kinda sits and watches. Fou-lou was more interesting than Ryu in 4.
>>
>>2790636
I liked how in 3, battles took place on the actual map. It's a small thing, but I appreciate it. The world map is also nice.

It's just a shame the game felt really restrictive and took hours upon hours for the game to actually get interesting. I came really close to just dropping the game, because it felt like it was going nowhere, and I didn't like any of the characters.

It was enjoyable, but at the end, it felt rather generic. Battle system almost felt like a step down from 2's. The shaman system really gave 2 a surprising amount of depth and variety.

I guess I wasn't really "invested" in some of the characters in IV, but I found the whole setting and premise to be very interesting. And having those moments where you got to play as the villain were great. Not many games have done that sort of thing.
>>
BOF 2's soundtrack is such a major disappointment after 1's

Maybe it's the isometric angles?

I feel like Dragon Quarter is in a class of its own because it's just so different from the rest. That said, it's one of my GOATs, easily in my top five. As for the rest:

4>3>2>1

It's an interesting case of a series genuinely improving with each iteration, something you can hardly say with nearly every other JRPG series.

I honestly think all the BoFs have shit gameplay right up until 4 where it suddenly clicks and actually starts making sense. That combo and skill system is just really good. It's smooth as fuck. Not to mention 4 is the best looking and most horrifying.

Still, I like 5 better. 4 is about compromise. 5 is about fuck your shitty compromises I'm a dragon now.

Who gets your vote for the best healer in the BoF franchise?

Rand's heals were pretty good if I remember right, plus he was a great frontline tank. Nina 4 was good too, though not as hardy as Rand was.

I don't even remember who the main healers were in 1 or 3.

Nina was the main healer in 1. She also had loads of buffs and used a rapier. Nina 2 stands out as the Nina who was primarily a black mage.
>>
>>2790074
>Ryu's dragon powers
>borderline useless
Not even remotely. Wisdom fruits, anon.

I just played it a week ago. I won't deny it's flawed. Probably my biggest issue is that the frequency of random battles can be a bit much at times. That and shaman fusions, as cool as they are, get broken too easily. I do agree it has the best cast though (especially the best Nina by far), and I enjoy how the story is filled with various sorts of character arcs rather than just a long journey.

I'd say IV is the best but II holds a special place for me.
>>
>>2798701
I seem to remember using shamanized Bow as a healer in 2, which was bizarre. I think he had some kind of full party heal that cost a lot of MP.

>>2798969

I disagree. I feel his survival actually does a lot to give Ryu and Fou's final conflict actual weight.

If Fou wants to kill everyone even the innocent to punish the wicked then Ryu as his opposite wants to save the innocent even if it means the wicked are spared

I prefer the 3rd, mainly because of the gene system, but i know in other hand that party members sucked and the end is fucking terrible. The game still got many comfy moment that i loved.

I really like the 2nd episode, character were fine and fusion was really a cool thing.

Maybe i'll pass for a dumb but i don't appreciate the 4th, maybe because the game don't have a playable world map. I dont have even finished the game, as i can remember i stoped right on the last boss, i think i didn't farm enough cause i would like to finish the game really fast and not play it again.

You weren't doing anything special. You weren't making unique dragons you where just attaching elements to the same base dragons.

What is the difference between opening the magic menu and picking frost dragon and opening the gene menu picking frost then picking dragon.

It really didn't help that you were invariably going to use the same transformations every time anyway. You had like 30 genes, and would only end up using 6-8 actual forms. (whelp>dragon>Behemoth/Pygmy>Fusion>Myrmidon>Kaiser)

The fourth game really cuts the bullshit and is just like, here's the forms you were gonna use anyway.

5 is even better and just makes the best form the only form, and makes it hells of badass to make up for the lack of variety.

Had a friend when I was little who owned a SNES and was way into RPGs. He had a lot of the good'uns that have since appreciated to obscene value back when you could get 'em for MSRP. Breath of Fire II was one that he'd frequently be engrossed in for the whole time I was over til my mom came and picked me up around dinner time.

2 things I remember clearly to this day:

1) the final fight was with some dude going on about "god" this and "god" that. It was world shaking, as this was my first experience with a depiction of a religious zealot speaking of the "grace of god" but actually being a murderous nutjob. It was totally fucking metal.

Didn't play Dragon Quarter, even if I do have it. I disliked 4, maybe undeservingly so. I didn't like trashcan robot, Nina sucked, Cray was kind of okay as was the fox lady. Scias was a waste of time and to this day I wonder what was the point of having him as a playable character since he contributes exactly nothing to the story in general.

The plot was kind of fun, I guess, but at times it was just weird.

>Scias was a waste of time and to this day I wonder what was the point of having him as a playable character since he contributes exactly nothing to the story in general.

Maybe you should try actually paying attention. Because they explain pretty clearly why people join up with the endless.

Also Ershin is best character
>>
>>2804908
I kinda feel that way but for 3. My biggest issue with it is that nothing interesting almost ever happens. The first half is mostly "Run away from the horses" and the second half is "Let's go meet the goddess!" And that's pretty much it.

I also didn't really find most of 3's characters interesting. 2 definitely had the most memorable cast followed by 4. People go on about Teepo but I didn't really feel anything for him cause he was only present for a very short time at the beginning of the game.
>>
>>2805037

Seriously they expect the whole Teepo thing to be a huge shocker but it only raised more questions. Plus Rei's "power" goes completely unexplained

I dunno, I wasn't a big fan of Ershin, but I don't remember how much of that was because they didn't just give me Deis instead. I might be in the minority in that though, since her popularity seems to be low compared to all the attention that Katt and Nina get most of the time.

My Deis pictures seem to have disappeared as well.

Scias wasn't bad, but he really seemed like he faded into the background a lot. Wasn't he also sort of a victim of censorship, getting a stutter instead of being a drunk? 4 seemed to really get the shit end of the stick as far as changed scenes went, although it's not bad enough to change the quality of the game, or feel like you missed much.

Yeah, but if we're being honest I think I like the stutter better. The quiet solemn mercenary is played out and him having a stutter being the reason he doesnt speak much just gives him a bit more charm to me
>>
>>2805107
I liked Scias, but what was the point of having him as a playable character? He contributes zero for the story, has zero character development aside from that one part where he cuts the ropes that bind nazi fox lady. He's just along for the ride because they wanted a cool dog samurai to go along with you.

There was a lot of text to go along with the assumedly fake screenshots. It seemed to be descriptions rather than characters talking, which would make it more VN like. Plus, it's not as if there were a ton of the screens either.

The ones I still have seem to have a 4chan filename, so I guess I didn't save some of the others from the site. I have some of the other artwork from his page with the original filenames, so I don't remember why I didn't keep more. I'll post a few more up since I wasn't able to find them still online alongside his other art.

The first game isn't too bad since you can eventually get an item that lets you avoid encounters. It's not really EASY, but it's not a huge problem. The encounter rate in the 2nd game is murder though, plus the fact that it's tough to run away.

comfy and edgy has been used so many times for so many things that it has lost all definition in 4chan

you can classify literally anything as either "comfy" or "edgy"

>the meaning of language evolves over time
>I guess that means nothing means anything

shit man why can't you just learn to keep up with society instead of bitching about it
>>
>>2810113
You could have just asked me how I found it comfy instead of insulting me man, what the hell.
>>
>>2810121
that kind of justification is skewed. There's been plenty of times in 4chan and in other areas of the internet where the term "edgy" was used for anything that was in any way "dangerous" or "dark". When someone says stupid shit I've seen people call that anon "edgy" for no apparent reason.

there is no standard for what was edgy.

same for when someone uses comfy. Someone can say "comfy" to something someone else thinks is sleep-inducing boring.

describing something as comfy or edgy is a poor way of describing something when everyone has their own stupid standards for what is edgy and what is comfy.

>>2810131

It's just /v/, and most of them are too young to realize this shit has been going on since localizing video games began. BoF 4 -is- one of the worst cases of localization censorship, either way.

There's nothing really interesting in 1 and 3 that makes them worth playing. Uninteresting characters, uninteresting plot, and incredibly bland gameplay for both of them.
