Why is this game still being played, and not its 16-bit counterparts? Is it just nostalgia, or does it do anything better than them?
I'm not sure. You'd think hacking the 16-bit ROMs for updated rosters is easier because they don't use the NES's horribly-snarled bank switching.

PS1 Super Bowl is basically the same game with a few more plays and criminally long save/load times. I like it because I can play it on the go but the NES version definitely has its charm.

It's just more fun.

why play that version over the SNES version though? And shouldn't it be easier to run an NES/SNES emulator than a PS emulator?
Fun as all hell. Even with all the newer maddens coming out Tecmo Bowl is one of the funnest to play.
IDK it's just the one I played as a kid. And no matter how good you get, it seems you can be surprised and still lose a game. I've played one game of tecmo bowl in 10 years and we go into overtime, and my guy fumbles, team runs it in,game over. pretty cheap win, but I liked it.

The 8 bit (tsb) is the superior game. Basically it runs faster than the 16 bit version. Also it's way more charming. The 16 bit is just not as good in comparison. Although it is still good. Maybe on Genesis. Because it runs at a good speed. But I remember a few years back XBL on 360 released a "remake". it was basically a redesigned port of the 16 bit version. It was shit.
What are the tier lists for the teams?
>>2786742
1. Nostalgia
2. Fun-factor
3. Relative ease of romhacking and cart-flashing.

>good tier
Bills, 49ers, Oilers, Chiefs, Giants
>decent tier
Raiders, Bengals, Detroit, Miami, Eagles
>shit
New England, Colts, Browns

Raiders should be on good tier. Bo Jackson breaks the game
What makes it fun?

Other gridiron football games at the time were more sim-style, and horrendously slow. Tecmo sped everything up, secured the NFL & NFLPA licenses (minus a few famous QBs), and made the game arcade-friendly while still adhering to basic NFL rules.

NES bank switching is really freaking bad especially if it's MMC3 cartridges.

>MMC3 memory mapping

I forgot one other important detail (although I suppose it goes hand-in-hand with "ease of romhacking"). The NES version has been expanded to a full 32-team league; It's not possible yet in the SNES version (and very few people care).

Detroit too. Barry was almost just as OP as Bo Jackson was.
