Maria's doves are about 10x better than all of Richter's sub-weapons combined. She can fire them while moving. Can fire two of them for a continuous stream. Each dove hits TWICE for massive accumulated damage. Not even close.

Did some testing a moment ago. Maria takes exactly, no more and no less, 50% more damage than Richter. So, in other words, Richter has 50% more health. For instance, if Maria has 100 health, then Richter has 150 health. That's a pretty good bonus if you think about it. Also, don't forget how useful his sub-weapons are considering that most of them use a single heart. Maria is all about offense and speed, while Richter is more about defense and reach.
Also, considering that this game is extremely anime-ish to begin with, you shouldn't expect this game to be a typical dark and grim Castlevania. So if you're expecting a serious and gothic Castlevania game then yeah you might not like the inclusion of a stereotypical anime girl like Maria. But if you acknowledge that Rondo of Blood is actually a bright and cheerful anime-like game with a bit of humor (just look at Dracula's goofy-ass-fucking hairdo) then there's nothing wrong with Maria.

I'm not into anime loli shit so I don't care for anime girl characters at all. So initially I thought Maria's presence in the game was fucking awkward and disturbing because Castlevania games are supposed to be dark. And the fact that Maria is 1000x stronger than Richter made me roll my eyes. But Rondo of Blood as a whole is the most light-hearted and comical Castlevania game ever made, and you can tell that having a Magical Loli Girl was the focus of the game considering that way more thought and work was put into her character than Richter (she has way more animations, more moves, more items, more consumables, moer everything).
