Newsflash: there is no "derivative/transformative work" clause in US Copyright.

Good luck suing on a copyright you don't even own.

Samus has like zero muscle mass in the newer games.

He sperged harder than he should have really early.
I bet he suffers from premature ejaculation.

I used to be a sprite ripper myself, don't know if I am going to get back into it though...

Only reason I did it is because it hasn't been done before. Also gives awareness about various games people may want to play.

There are so many unknown JRPGs out there and extracting/ripping the graphics from them at least gives it a little more coverage and possibly people who may eventually request translation of it.

Fame and rep really don't mean much to me.

How does one rip sprites anyway? I always imagined they got to some point in a game, turned off all layers except the sprite layer, screenshot it, then erase whatever's not the sprite they want. But surely there has to be a more efficient way than that.
>>
>>2784359
that's precisely how they do it
>>
>>2784359
There is, but the sort of person who rips sprites isn't the sort of person with any technical knowhow whatsoever.
>>
>>2784359
Sometimes, certain arcade games have diagnostics screens with functional object viewers. Most of them don't, though.
>>
>>2784359
That's usually it, but there is software that can extract the actual sprite data from the ROM or ISO.
>>
>>2784390
aren't all graphics just stored as garbled tiles in these games? assembling them would be harder than taking screenshots

This is how it's done the old fashioned way if one feels like reassembling garbled graphics is a pain in the ass:

Save States
Disabling Layers
Animget or any capturing software/frame slowdown function of emulator

However the biggest step is research. Studying the game's story specifically to see if any characters get a graphical change. Big annoyance in JRPGs that have not been fan translated. Even if you do use Pro Action Replay/Game Genie Codes to unlock the features, you still need to sift through the coding to find out what causes what effect.

For those who want easier extraction in SNES Games, there is vSNES which allows you to get the characters and backgrounds from the savestate; it's perhaps the best tool for extracting sprites and backgrounds from a SNES Game. It even allows you to remove small parts of sprites that may be obstructing other parts. For example: if you want to get specifically the weapon sprite from a game like Final Fantasy 6 or Treasure of the Rudras for example.

I was gonna say Ducker Mobile Cannon, but practically every enemy in the NES version of Gradius is cute. From the fortune cookie spinners to the fish shaped things that follow you to the bouncing R2D2s to the compacted Big Core, everything is just '3'.

Tile Editors and some technical knowledge. Check out the spriters resource, some folks at the forums are insane.
Pic related, pretty interesting stuff. If you're interested, I did two case studies;

You could get away with using Fraps instead of individual screenshots with MAME. Then all you have to do afterwards is just export the capture fire as .gif
