I had a lot of fun with the Game Boy titles. The others are barely playable. Lots of "git gud"-retro shit.
Contra 3 is only great tier, it's fantastic but the Mode 7 levels ruin it from being perfect. Maybe bump Contra 4 to god tier.

I never understood the hate from the Mode 7 levels in Contra III. They're pretty fun and not that long anyway.

The lack of a physical release is what kills it for me. Even Otomedius got a retail release on the Xbox 360.

I would switch it with Uprising, that's a good game, but the first Hard Corps is much better.

Probably from emukiddies who realized they couldn't play it well on their keyboards and were forced to buy the actual game.
I really liked Shattered Soldier. It came out when I was a teenager and I remember playing it with friends. They fucking sucked. They would die at some easy part and I'd be all "DAMN IT YOU FUCKED UP OUR SCORE!"
I played it about five years ago by myself and beat it fully. I got the best ranking. It was hard as fuck, you can't die a single life but somehow I did it.
Is Contra 4 any fun? I've been thinking about buying it since I got a DS not long ago. I've beaten 1, 2, and 3 and several of the non-canon ones too. I guess I should beat 4 too.

It's possible to die a few times as long as your hit rate doesn't below 90%.
Contra 4 is pretty much Contra III with a wired hook gimmick. It's pretty fun, although in terms of level designs and bosses, it's less like an all new adventure and more like a greatest hits of Contra's most iconic moments, with the NES Contra and Contra III getting the most homages out of all the games. The fact that the four default PCs are just palette swaps of Bill Reiser was a waste of an opportunity.
