I don't even know why they gave him Gradius. Everyone knows he stood no chance of beating it. The AD played more than Arino did.

It's Gradius. Shmups are his worse genre. If you seriously thought he had a chance in hell of winning you've clearly never watched the show to begin with.

>>
>>2739380
I'm the asshole for wanting to talk about recent stuff because someone else doesn't keep up and can't be bothered to not read spoilers?

Spoiling everything just to piss off whiny people like you.

Protip: If you aren't current with something, be it books or TV shows, it's unrealistic to expect for things to not be spoiled for you by the internet. People want to talk about recent things, as surprising as that sounds. If you fall behind, that's on you, not on everyone else.

We have the spoiler tag just for this exact occasion.
How can you be this autistic to refuse to not to spoil things for everyone who hasn't seen things yet when it is so easy?
There are people who are new to this series and are still catching up and there are people who don't stalk these threads every day to get the newest subs.
It's just a matter of not being an ass to not spoil shit for everyone.
This is basic 101 for just being nice to each other for fuck's sake.
>>
>>2739387
Also

>can't be bothered to not read spoilers?
That is the fucking point. You do not use the spoiler tag, so people will read spoilers by accident.

You have to put shit that will ruin it for everyone who hasn't watched yet into spoiler tags.

I guess you have to know Japanese to really appreciate these. I'm already terrible with remembering names, and worse with foreign ones. When he's rattling out who's who I get all confused and blank out. They cut out so much it's even harder to follow when you don't get all the clues. A lot of times he comes to some conclusion and I have no idea how he got there.

so what are the best episodes to introduce this show to a friend who isnt much of a weaboo?

It has subtitles so it will never happen if you're american.
>>
>>2745146
Maybe start with one of your favorite episodes or with a game that they know well, as long as it isn't a Zelda or Mega Man.

I think Prince of Persia and Ghouls & Ghosts are both great to introduce the show to almost anyone. Try Sonic or Battletoads if you want to go with something more recent.
>>
>>2745146
famous games? like mario or mega man or dkc

dont introduce it with some obscure japanese detective novel or horse racing game and you're set

I thought the same when I watched the Yuuji one, ended up skipping it after 20 or 30 minutes, but after I re-watched it and focused on the narration it felt quite entertaining, to the point I "deducted" the case in a similar fashion as Arino did, well, not precisely, but at least it did make sense to me and I didn't feel clueless as I usually get with say the quiz episodes where most of the time I don't even have a single idea what's the answer (not really a bad thing in this case, of course).

>>2749109
Yep, that sounds quite frightening, I can't wait.
>>
>>2749114
I don't know, I find the quiz episodes a lot of fun, I don't really go into them trying to answer the questions though, since they are often about Japanese 80s and 90s pop culture which I admittedly don't know much about. It's just fun to watch Arino and the crew play these games together.
>>
>>2749114
>>2749105
well you I guess you could call the game quite.... shocking...
>bah dum tsh
>>
>>2749117
Exactly, The game play aspect of the quizzes is pretty much unimportant past some cases, but considering the format of the show, I only feel lost when I don't understand these questions as I normally do with a detective game or a high-text one when I don't focus on the dialogue. (or if I know nothing about the game that Arino's playing) Considering it's a fun show I usually end up reading the subs in a fast way and since English isn't my native language, elaborated dialogue would get misinterpreted by me.

Well I mean if the situation was reversed and it was a bunch of American dudes playing City Connection and they had to avoid hitting the cat instead of just yelling "cat cat cat!" they said "neko neko neko!" Even if they all knew what neko meant wouldn't it still be easier for them to say cat since it's their native language? Your brain has less to think about and when you only got a split second to react you'd want the communication to be speedy as possible. I don't know, it doesn't really matter, it just struck me as odd they just randomly started speaking English for that one part.

>>2752548

>>
>>2753557
the thing is, they're not yelling 'change', they're yelling チェンジ. They're not 'speaking English'.

If you go to Japan and said 'change' they'd think you're speaking Japanese. Same with cheese, banana, milk... So many students I had were shocked to learn these words weren't originally Japanese.

Your reaction is like French going 'Why are they saying café, when it's coffee shop in English?'

>>

how do Japanese not know that these loanwords, written in Katakana, are not originally from Japan?
Do they not learn English at all in school or what?
>>
>>2754368
Loanwords can be very far from their English counterparts. Take the classic "viking". Have a guess what that means in Japanese.

A viking? Fuck no. Maybe one of their hats? Again, no.

No, Viking in Japanese means a buffet. The reason being, some Jap businessmen went to Denmark, saw a smorgasbord, and decided it was a great idea. After asking for the name, they realised it would be far too hard for Japs to say, so instead they just used the word Viking.

Today, many restaurants throughout Japan advertise lunch-time vikings.

>>2754368
Just because something's written in katakana doesn't mean it's a loan word. There are a number of reasons words may be written in katakana.

Also, like my example, ask someone if they think café is English, or typhoon, or tsunami, or tycoon, or kindergarten, or billabong, or guru...
>>
>>2754431

Kanji are used for

>typhoon
台風
>tsunami
津波

Katakana are for foreign loan words mainly, but are also used to draw the eye in advertisements as well. You have a kanji for strawberries 苺, but it's still often written as イチゴ in flyers.
>>
>>2754443
You're correct, but you're mixing up my two separate points. 1. Katakana for more than loanwords. 2. English speaking people probably think the listed words aren't loanwords/of foreign origin.

To add to my comment about students not knowing though, from a learning aspect, a lot of children are introduced to loanwords from their parents, teachers or on TV and through other media. They say these words naturally, and often, why should they not believe that the people saying them are saying Japanese words. It's part of their vernacular.
Japanese society is also still closed off enough to believe that things they see in Japan are, for the most part, Japanese. For example, so many Japanese people I met believed that Snoopy was a Japanese character. Same goes for Miffy.

The issue that they're not using 替えて, and instead using チェンジ is like using tsunami instead of tidal wave. It's just now become a synonym that can be, and is, used.
Also... it sounds 'funnier' for Japanese.
>>
>>2754467
>The issue that they're not using 替えて

They'd say 交代 in that situation anyway. "Change" is just a common English loan word, I really don't see an issue. Not do I care.

I know these are oldish posts, but /gccxg/ isn't about who has seen the most episodes, and not everyone has seen every episode anyway. I myself enjoy the show but have only watched 20-30 episodes. I'm willing to bet that I'm not the only GCCX watcher who has never seen him play a shooter, or hell, there are probably plenty of people who have still never seen an episode. For you to just blatantly post spoilers like that more or less ruins a big part of the fun for those people.

Alright guys, >>2738052 here again, I'm genuinely sorry for this post if it spoiled it for some of you. I thought it was obvious what the turnout would be, especially like 10 minutes into the episode where he has to continually use the Konami code to even beat any level. Even if he'd beat it with codes to me that's still not beating it, so I figured most people would think that too. Anyway I can't delete the post, so I don't know what to do if mods are fine with leaving it there. All I can say is I didn't mean to be an ass and cause a whole fight about it. The thought of it even being a spoiler at the time didn't even occur to me, so I won't do it again, but sorry anyway.

Arino seems to be hit and miss at random. He took down Prince of Persia, failed at SMB3. He managed to finish Golgo 13 and Ninja Gaiden 2, but couldn't clear Mega Man 2. I just don't fully understand his playstyle. How could you beat NG2 and not MM2? Go figure.

>>
>>2762603
my guess is that because it's a TV show, someone is running metrics on whether Arino should win or lose.

Depending on what the perceived audience reaction is going to be, failing a popular game may be as popular (or more) than beating a hard game.

After all, the Arino we see on TV is a persona, and he's an actor and comedian. None of it is real; it's all just for fun.

I bet Arino really is pretty good at games, but you'd never know it by watching the show.
>>
>>2762936
Other Japanese celebrities who played games in their private time with Arino (like Koji Kato) reportedly stated he does suck at vídeo games.
>>
>>2762936

Nah, the outcomes are not scripted. He's just better at some games than others, and it also depends on how much the ADs help him. For example if he reaches the last boss, they often help him to get back because getting to the last boss and failing would be disappointing.

Looks like they use whatever they have working at the moment - we're talking about a three-decade old hardware, after all.
In some episodes, you can clearly see they using the RF Switch socket, while in others, there's some different cables running on the left side - probably modded consoles?

Watching the Gradius episode, I thought they unplugged the cables to shot the "Kacho On" scene, so they'd want to avoid cluttering the close up, but it remained unplugged for the entire episode, like the moments when AD Takahashi appeared. It wouldn't make sense trying to hide the mess just in that episode, but sometimes they conceal the entire back of the console too.
>>
>>2762936
I'm pretty sure he is better than he lets on, he performs too many stupid mistakes that make you seriously question if they are just doing it because it is funnier.

>>
>>2764913
Maybe they had to re-record the Gradius episodes live video footage for some reason?
>>
>>2766479
And that's valid reasoning, especially if we take all the TV production into account. But the way they constantly have to deal with daylight makes you wonder how much is this all scripted. One thing that leaves no doubt is how shooting can take a very long time.

>>
>>2767486
No no no, I'm not talking about THAT (by the way, that was a good joke and part of an awesome episode anyway - probably one of my favorite moments in this show). Besides at this rate, Toujima would probably get a nasty tan from using the sun blocking technique too much.

I was talking about how they used to rely on daylights, then had to add studio lighting kits by night, It's less noticeable in Seasons 17 and 18 - probably because the new room doesn't have Windows facing either east or West.

Pic related. We know for a thing this was one of the smaller rooms they used. No wonder Kacho had to resort to those cooling pads, with at least two studio lights pointing at his face.

were any of the games from "waste of color" section remade in color?
>>
>>2773310
It depends on how you understand as "remade".
Some of those games already had colored renditions by the time the GB version was released.
The Oni series basically was born and died within the Game Boy lifespan. Selection: The Chosen One/The Sword of Hope got a sequel on mobiles (pretty much colored). Donkey Kong 94 pretty much evolved into the Mario vs Donkey Kong series. The Monster Maker series had several colored games for Famicom, Super Famicom and one even for Saturn.

2D Classic Prince of Persia and Street Fighter 2 got colored ports/remakes released after those Game Boy versions, so, they fit, right?
