Sayonara Umihara Kawase was released on steam this week so you don't have to buy a vita(or vita tv) to play it now if you didn't already. Umi thread to celebrate.
Recently got an everdrive for SNES. How is the game on that system? Is it a decent place to start?
>>2730785
The original is still great and you can start just about anywhere in the series(there's only 3 distinct games). The major differences between the games would be line elasticity, enemies and levels.
Never needed a vita to begin with, it was released on 3DS originally
>>2730947
Great, now I got it on a portable people own, and on my PC, where it'll be superior regardless.
>>2730781
Oh heck yes! I totally forgot that was coming out this month. It's on my Steam wishlist.
Does it have the extra content from the Vita version?
>>2730947
60fps is overrated, fuck you
>>2731142
>60fps is overrated
No, it is very important for a technical platforming series like this.
>>2731228
No, it's not, FUCK YOOOOOOOU
>>2731229
>preferring greater input lag and less smooth motion
I'm not the kind of person who doesn't play games that aren't at 60fps, and I already own the 3DS version of Sayonara, but I simply do not understand why you would choose a lower FPS version of a game like this over a higher one.
>>2731243
I know, mang, I'm just kidding with you. :^)
I don't remember he being this... eh developed.
>>2731506
She's been pretty busty since the Shun days
>No gog version
>No drm free version
come on, for a game like that, without workshop or multiplayer...
I've racked up a few hours in the steam version so far and aside from the non-existent graphical options (as well as no resolution options) it seems to be a good port. Haven't had any crashes or other technical issues so far.
>>2731598
But it does have workshop support.
Hopefully it'll actually be put to good use.

Game just needs better textures to make use of the resolution bump. Still, pretty decent all things considered.
Level 24 and 54 are so much harder than anything else in the game that it feels more like an oversight than carefully made challenges.
So now that Sayonara is on Steam, with SFC and Shun soon to follow, PC is basically the definitive platform for the UK speedrun scene now?
I see Steam Discussions are on point
Not fucking retro
faggots
Shun is the best game. It has the most levels with the most variety, including very creative bosses like whatever the fish in the barrel was. It's also incredibly hard, but not to the point where it feels unbeatable.
>>2733473
I agree. Plus the pastel-style sprite work is beautiful.
>>2733334
it wasn't?
>>2733532
Uh... No?
Emulators aren't valid for speedruns.
Only played the SFC one and I'm not so sure about the 3D angles these games have. Will buy the port of the SFC game though.
>>2733576
>Emulators aren't valid for speedruns.
You don't know what you're talking about. It depends on the game.
>>2733582
The 3D view has never caused a problem for me personally. I think they play fine in that regard.
Anyone know how to get the Revision Demon, Ready For Anything and Self-Appreciation achievements in the steam version?
>>2734006
No it doesn't. When the fuck has anyone ever been allowed to use an emulator in a legit speedrun on GDQ?
If you want to be part of the actual competitive speedrunning scene, you don't use emulators. Period.

This is what you sound like.
>>2734539
The times people get at GDQ are mostly too shitty to compete with the best times for any given game. If anything, GDQ speedruns aren't "legit" because of that. It's not MLG for speedrunners, it's just a fun event.

As far as I know the only other notable title by the director, Kiyoshi Sakai, is a licensed game on the Genesis. Those two games are just by the publisher of Sayonara.

No idea, doesn't umihara have a battery save?

>game is $15 on Steam
I am buttmad, I paid $30 (or was it $35?) close to its release for 3DS, and I was disappointed with the amount of content for what I paid. It should've been fucking $15 in the first place for what it was.
Natsume are a bunch of fucking jews, fuck them.
>>2738803
I was more frustrated with the lack of a physical release. Fucking 3DS region lock.
>>2738818
I also thought that was pretty shit, but I wanted to play it rather not play it so I just got it on the eShop.
>>2738803
>Natsume are a bunch of fucking jews
I think Nintendo decide the prices on the eShop, not the developers.
I bought Odd Odyssey about a year ago, when it was "on sale", and it was still like $15. So obviously I'm not in a huge hurry to buy it again. I'll wait for the winter sale.
>>2738907
Going to need a really fucking good reason to believe that Nintendo solely dictates the prices on eShop, because your unsupported claim isn't really enough when every other digital sales platform has the publisher decide the prices.
As someone who hasn't played any of them extensively, is the Steam version a good place to start or is there a better version I could jump into? Should I just start from the first entry?
>>2738712
You could at least check out wikipedia page or something - Umihara's illustrator Kondo is listed as director of both games. Glory of Heracles was published by Nintendo and publisher of both Code of Princess and Sayonara is Agatsuma ent. the place where Sakai works.
>>2740049
The steam version is the most beginner-friendly. There are characters that give you mid-level checkpoints, you can practice all the levels individually before tackling survival mode (playing the game in one go with a strict time limit and only 10 lives), the bosses are easier and the rope physics are more forgiving. Can play the SFC version right after since it's not any more difficult than Sayonara. Shun is the hardest one out of the three games both when it comes to stages and the physics.
>>2740049
I suggest you to start with SFC version, it has the easiest to control rope physics and you can see and get used to the way the game is supposed to be played right from the start (with lives and time limit). They hide it in Sayonara as survival challenge, and even though game's endings count as cleared only when you complete challenges, judging by comments in the internet, most people think of them like of something optional.
>>2740049
You might spoil yourself with the new games mechanics.
>>2731142
>60fps is overrated, fuck you
>this is what consoleplebs actually believe

Great!
I have the 3DS version.
This saved me from buying a Vita.
How's the vita version? I'm thinking of buying it.
>>2741881
Why's her torso so fucking long? Just look at how far get belly button is from her tits. It's where her hips should be, and her torso keeps stretching off the fucking image.
That boy's tits are huge.
>>2742741
If you already have a vita then go for it since it comes with the original as well, but the steam version is just as good if you don't want to drop cash on a vita or vitaTV just for it.
>>2740813
>They hide it in Sayonara as survival challenge
This has always really bugged me. Survival Mode has to be unlocked, when it should have just been the default game mode.
>>2743639
>it should have just been the default game mode.
Oh, I don't blame them, even with stage select people often think that it's very short game for some reason. Also it's the first mobile title from the start and ability to pick any level has it's own charm, keeping in mind that the real game is still there. In my opinion, they should have just made it more apparent that survival challenges are the real deal, maybe showing the credits only after clearing challenge would be better.
>>2743639
I think it does a good job at easing new players in, honestly. There's a nice sense of progression that wouldn't be there if the game just had a practice mode which makes all the levels satisfying to beat individually. It's just that they don't encourage survival mode as much as they should have. Locking levels/bosses until you reach them in survival mode would go a long way to reinforcing the idea that it's how the game's meant to be played. It wouldn't be a perfect solution, but still.
>>2743515
I ended up buying the vita version. No game this adorable look should be this fucking frustratingI am having fun though.
>>2744223
Other than the vita being your only controller and the screen size it's probably the best version. Do enjoy anon.
>>2735764Kawase enjoying her first kiss on a foggy autumn night, with the moonlight glistening on the tranquil waters.
The difficulty really ramps up once you get to the alt routes/"secret" levels, jeez
>>2744583
Yep. It's a pretty good design philosophy for a platformer like this. The whole world is open from the start, but it's structured so that new players will naturally be guided down the easiest route, which is essentially a tutorial. Nothing has to be unlocked; the only thing limiting you is your own skill.

You seem like you have a small amount of knowledge about a subject and don't realize that there's more to it than you know, so you think you know everything about it. You don't actually know everything about this subject. Please open your mind and learn something.
>>2747008
You seem to have a flawed understanding of something and don't realize it. As such, you think your lack of comprehension implies a deep respect for that elusive meaning. ROMs and Emulator use are generally considered to be Tool Assisted, however each game has it's own rules for practicality sake, IE a japanese only famicon disk system release or a game for the ZXSpecrtum may be done with an emulator according to the game's community guidelines while other games may allow different ports to be used, such as Cosmo's world record of the Ocarina of Time using the Chinese iQue Player which is an Nintendo 64 eumlation hardware officially released by Nintendo for mainland Chinese consumers. Often these runs will be done live and make use of hand-cams to prove the player is actively playing the game.
>>2747393
The iQue is an emulator?
>>2746843
It's not that bad if you take it slow and don't get impatient. The snails can go fuck themselves, though. No idea why they felt the need to add them since they weren't in the 3DS version
>>2747393
that's an unreasonable amount of effort for a world record that usually won't last more than a couple years
>>2747495
The hand-cams? Not at all. OBS to record the game, aim your webcam at your hands while you play and put it in the frame. Twitch streamers do it all the time, they even have special plugins to highlight which button they're pressing on the emulation.
>>2747468
Not quite, it's a system on a chip that uses ported games loaded off of ROM files. But more or less it's not an original N64.
>>2747185
Why do you care? Do you even speedrun this game?
I'm probably the best Sayonara player on this board (for survival runs at least) and I don't really care if some people use emulators.

>>2749927
The SNES game is great.
I think it's actually better than the sequels. It seems like you move a lot faster (I'm not sure if you actually do though), and I like how the color scheme is kind of subdued and "earthy." It's a really unique look for a platformer.
>>2749929I'm fucking terrible at this game, but I never imagined I'd have so much fun with it. How much longer does it go, I got to that one really big fish before putting it down for a couple of days.
>>2749931
>How much longer does it go, I got to that one really big fish
That's about a third the length of the game.
The thing you need to understand though, is that Umihara Kawase follows a tree-like structure. You proceed through levels in a linear order, but there are multiple branching and overlapping routes, some of which are longer and/or harder than others.
Did a search for Sayonara Umihara Kawase on youtube limiting the results to within a month just to see if anyone was talking about it. The results are what you would expect but one person did go to the effort of commissioning an image for their video review.
Plus I have now become extremely paranoid about my pronunciation of "lure"
>>2749927
But imagine if you were just sunbathing on a floating platform and Umihara Kawase didn't realize you were lying there, and just flew in out of nowhere and landed tits-first right on top of your face. Wouldn't that be embarrousing?

Is Kawase an alcoholic?
One of the four stage themes in Sayonara is 居酒屋, "tavern." These stages are decorated with bottles and crates. Paper lanterns provide a festive atmosphere, but the music has a wistful, melancholy air to it. Is Kawase lonely? Is she drowning her sorrows in bland-tasting Japanese beer? Is she hoping to find love, but with nowhere to find it in a rapidly modernizing Japanese culture that's passing her by?
>>2757951

If Umihara can't make it, what hope is there for the rest of us?
...Move over, if you would Ms. Kawase. I think I also need a stiff drink.
>>2757951
Umihara doesn't live in modern japan.
She lives in something proximate to Japan, but not. The land of summer vacations. The place where you can stand ankle deep in a small pond, looking at tadpoles. A place where the sea smells like surf and salt. Where, yes, there are seaside taverns, and their food tastes more like food than the food you eat. Colors are more vibrant, music clearer and more pleasant.
It is a hyperreality, where everything is what it is, but moreso. The thing that nostalgia aims at, but here, it is current and instant. It is out of time, out of place.
It's basically the world as it would exist for a sentient dog.

Apparently it's the port of the DS version.
>>2764940
I've only played a little of the DS version, but there's no slowdown right?
>>2764969
Basically, I mainly played the DS version and every time I tried the original SFC one on emulator it felt slower and had somewhat washed out colors in comparison. But I think I'm wrong - I misheard the music in trailer and thought it uses instrument samples they used in DS port, but it's actually the original ones. I heard version included in Vita port of Sayonara also uses original SFC music, so it's probably the port of Vita version.
>>2764969
No slowdown, and keeps time in centiseconds instead of deciseconds.
Am I supposed to know how to rocket jump to do some of these Sayonara doors?
>>2730781
How do you know when you've beaten this fucking game?
>>2765361
I think only stage 20 requires it. Stage 24 is easier with it to get the hard door.
>>2765376
When you've beaten all the levels at least once. Or when you did that and finished all the routes in survival mode if we're talking about Sayonara.
>>2765376
Well you can get to one of the endings(easiest just following stage 0-9), get all the endings, survival one or all endings, or get absolutely everything(backpacks, doors, clears, survival all endings, profiles, etc).
It depends what you consider beaten.
>>2765381
Yeah, I was frustrated with those doors and had to step back for a bit. I'm going to try learning the rocket jump because it feels like I should, thanks for confirming for me though!

Each is a very different game due to different rope physics, but still having the same gameplay(roping around like spiderman). There's no remakes but quite a few of ports.
an umihara style homebrew or port for the nes would be cool

Thanks m8.

proposal: spin off game, a slightly more adventurous and unreal RPG in the vein of Legend of the River King.
Peak comfy.
>>2774474
Instead of reading the thread, you should go play the game. Have you made it to F43 yet?
>>2774575
i fucking love this game, i wish the snes games got a western release
>>2775224
While it's not retro, there was a western release of the PS2 game you might be interested in if you haven't played it already. A friend of mine used to play it all the time so I assume it was good.
>>2775236
wow thank you so much, I had no idea they made a ps2 game for river king. Looks like i'm def going to be getting it in the near future.
10/10 great recommend!
I'm going to have to buy a gamepad to play Umihara Kawase on steam, it's totally impossible on keyboard.

I always noticed that song reminded me of something.
fucking sayonara field 46 i killed the stupid crab and then i choked and fell in the pit on the way to the door oh my fucking god
>>2775837
That happened to me twice before I finally beat it. Persevere, anon. At least it's not like the SFC game, where the crab battle is timed and you have to wait like four minutes to enter the door.

>tfw seeing ancient .gif i made
Bought Umihara Kawase SFC-Steam now, can't wait to binge tomorrow. Physics are true, right?
I peeked into the ARC file. Interesting news:
1) The unused enemies ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4SLTEzKCmPs&list=PLUlpBuEOUaJ-8VCG_Qogp8__yKboSpM7J ) are still there. They were ported to the NDS version too, and now they're in the PC version as well.
2) Some graphics have been re-done. In the SNES/NDS-versions there was a bunch of BIN files with separate palettes somewhere, but this time around they're DDS files, and the main menu background has been completely remade, for one.
3) No new levels, and from the looks of it, no changes to any of the level data. The maps are still compressed, too, so a level editor is still far off. :(

Proposal: M-rated reboot for the 18-35 dudegamer demographic.
>her name is too hard to pronounce, so she goes by "Umi" for short
>she's a Navy SEAL who specializes in anti-piracy ops
>enemies include Russian submarine crews, Somali pirates, and middle-eastern terrorists
>game has some lame B-movie plot about supersoldiers injected with fish DNA, so the monsters in the game are actually ex-human
>her body is toned and muscular
>but not TOO muscular because that would be "like, totally gay, bruh"
>her iconic grappling hook is now an electrified harpoon gun
>bikini top and hotpants, jiggle physics in breasts and buttocks
>when you're standing still, the camera tends to center on aforementioned jiggle zones
Is this an actual end or did I just run out of time?
>>2777749
It's an actual ending. You did it, anon!
>>2777772
>>2777772
How do you know that?
>>2777813
If you look up the map for the game it'll show whether it's an ending or not. I don't know what field that is but I've seen others get that door end.
>>2777813
Because I've gotten that ending many times. It's the level right after the crab boss.
>>2777749
If you beat the crab, then you legitimately reached the level and beat the game.
If you didn't beat the crab, then you got Twenty Minute Rule'd.
How do you unlock "savvy"?
All the other achievements are self-explanatory except this one.
>>2778031Play the game with the 5 minute rulepress select 100 times at the title screen
>playing SFC Umihara
>beat tadpole
>time my swing wrong, it hits me as it dives in
>do it again
>i get hit by the one frog i leave behind and miss my recovery hook
Fuck me.
>>2778183
Oh, thanks. It's been so long since I played this game I forgot that was even a thing.
>>2778206
The first time I played this game it took me like two weeks to beat that stupid tadpole. And like two years to beat the crab.
Now it's basically no trouble at all for me to run through the game. It's like riding a bike.
I've gotten 12/13 backpacks. I have the ones in the following levels:02,04,08,1618,30,31,34,46,48,50,52
Which one am I missing? I've combed the whole entire game looking for the last one.
>>2778221
The hardest boss is the second tadpole. Fuck that thing with a rake.
>>2779246
I'd say it's a tie between tadpole 2 and crucian carp.
>>2779217Hidden one at the start of F10
>>2779246
It has underwater safe spot.
>>2779393
Thanks. I knew someone on /vr/ would know.
>tfw no level editor
>>2779872
>yet
Is this thread in autosage yet?
>>2780168
Why were you expecting milk? Ohhh you thought it was a porn game!..? That doesn't make sense
>>2780617
He was expecting jugs, anon.
>>2778206
Almost the exact same thing just happened to me.
It's such a dumb looking boss, and it's pattern is really simple. This shouldn't be hard but I still haven't gotten past it.
