SO YOU WANT TO PLAY SOME PINBALL FAGGOT?

First you gotta have some things to play it with.

If you want some real deal pinball, https://pinside.com/pinball/map/where-to-play

If you can't go to any of those for any reason, there's pinball simulators.

http://pinballarcade.com/ is a widely popular one that simulates a bunch of classic tables but you either have to pay out the nose for DLC or torrent the damn thing.

http://vpuniverse.com/index.php/index.html is another one, requires a bit of fucking around but once you get it running you get all the free pinball you could ever want

Now there's some extra doohickeys if you need something extra.

Let's hope we can keep this going. The last thread lasted a long time. My league scores sucked balls tonight, but at least I got to shoot the shit with the old pros for hours on end. Also got that awesome glitch/possible easter egg on NES pinball where if you score high enough, the flippers turn invisible. Such a weird game.

Not much really, I used to be able to run it on my laptop, but I haven't tried it again. It's more than VP9 was, but that really wasn't terrible. Give it a whirl and see for yourself.

The problem with both of these docs is that they're kind of old now and don't cover the modern pinball resurgence of the past 5 years or so.

Has there actually been a resurgence? I know Jersey Jack opening increased the # of companies in the market by 100% but are they doing well? Are people spending money on pinball?
>>
>>2713632
There was a successful run by Spooky Games LLC, who funded their own table and sold out after making a not-insignificant number of units. The table is pretty spartan, but the execution of the theme is pretty fun. Dunno if they're going to follow up on it though.
>>
>>2713632
The collector's market has gone through the roof. Prices for tables are at an all time high. Stern is doing better now than they have been in the past decade or so. Some of the biggest pinball events have taken place the last 5 years. People are paying attention to pinball again.

NES pinball is decent, nothing spectacular, but certainly not mediocre either. It was either this one or Rollerball which had numerous extra flippers, and I always like tables with extra flippers beyond the bottom ones, it feels like there's more control that way.

I'm one of those guys from the past thread who haven't ever played a real pinball game, by the way. I will some day though.

I know there was a Pokémon themed pinball game for the Gameboy, but was there ever an actual physical table? I mean, Japan is probably lousy with all kinds of pachinko machines made on a Pokémon license, but I figure, Pokémon was so INCREDIBLY big in the late 90's/early 2000's, so it seems to me that maybe there could have been a table (not that pokémon isn't still big). Pic somewhat related, favorite pokémon.
>>
>>2715834
Pinball is almost exclusively an American thing. There's some popularity in Europe (especially Germany), but in Japan it never really caught on. Most licensed themed pinball games are based on American or European properties (Comic books, movies, music, etc.)

That's not entirely true.
Pinball is an American institution yes, but it was illegal in many American cities for decades up until the mid 1970s. The American pinball companies thrived on marketing their games to europe and other countries. Having an American theme was a big draw in Europe and elsewhere as USA was always considered the home of the best table manufacturers.
Europe had pinball companies like Playmatic and Zaccaria among others.

Sega Japan was producing its own pinballs locally for two short periods of time; 1971-1973 and 1976-1979. The 1970s were the golden age of Japanese-made pinballs. Up until that time, most of the pinballs were made in the USA and the prices were very high. In a typical amusement centre it would cost ¥50 per game for American-made pinballs. This was simply not affordable for most Japanese at that time.

As a result, Sega Japan started to produce a series of electromechanical pinballs in 1971. The price of Sega pinballs was only ¥30 per game, and so these became very popular in Japanese society.

Walking Dead.

Its a very boring table with nothing to shoot at. The pop bumpers slow the game down too much, the well walker in the middle of the field is dumb, and the safehouse/barn is so uninteresting. I don't get any sort of progression either, just a bunch of zombie noises constantly getting killed.

The 1.41 code is actually complete, but operators don't load it onto machines, preferring to leave launch code on: people launch the ball, watch it STDM, repeat 2x, and then the next person in line puts in $1.

Why update that? So check the code version.

>>2723097

>>
>>2723097
Depends on the table. Later tables are actually built with bumping in mind; there's literally shots you can't make and bonuses you can't hit without bumping the table. Super old tables/rare tables that are a bitch to maintain are considered bad manners to bump. If in doubt, ask the owner.

Gorgar is notorious for draining down the left lane. More often than not if I'm playing Gorgar I'm slapping it around like a cheap whore.

Zizzle guy here again.

Really? Pinball video games are good? I've played some but I always felt that part of the appeal of pinball was seeing the entire board/table.

I've played a limited number of pinball video games and other than Space Cadet Pinball on Windows (Which I very much enjoyed), they all do the stupid half screen scrolling thing.

I have a semi-mame set up (Modded OG Xbox, Sega Saturn, OG Wii & BC PS3) with an X-Arcade (don't judge...its just easier). I'll look into the Wii PinBall games suggested.
>>
>>2726104
The appeal IS the entire board/table; the physicality and real experience of it. It can never be truly emulated but some of the stuff currently going on like Pinball Arcade is the next best thing and are great digital representations of real machines.
Lot's of fun too.
>>
>>2726104
>Really? Pinball video games are good?
Some are.
I heard KISS Pinball for the PS1 was pretty bad, though on the flip side, it was only 10 dollars when it was new.
However, Space Cadet is gr8 m8, I r8 8/8.

Also, some people don't have any pinball tables anywhere close to where they live, so if it allows them to get their fix at home, that's always a thing.
>>
>>2726151
Speaking of Space Cadet, has anyone ever tried to make a real life Space Cadet table?

Fuck off is it pinball arcade is total shit, wank physics, wank 3d and poorly optimized.. the fucking ball doesn't even have a spin model or anything I mean it literally couldn't be a poorer representation of real life, Visual pinball 10/physmod5 is currently by FAR the best recreations of real life tables and pro pinball still has the best physics of all time.

>>2726104
they all do the stupid half screen scrolling thing.
Pro pinball is fixed full table view, pinfx2 has fixed full table view, visual pin is fixed full table view and even pinball arcade has it sounds to me like you've only played shit pinball games.

I've become more than a bit charmed by the nuances of Nintendo's launch title pinball on the nes. I don't know what it is, but I played the game for fucking hours when I picked it up. There's so much weird shit going on, like your flippers going invisible when you hit 10000 points. Today, just for shits and giggles, I gave the Vs. Arcade version a whirl, and now I'm wishing I had a real Vs. cabinet for this one, or at least a NES conversion reproduction. All those extras are so nice that the nes version feels like a pale prototype. This stuff fascinates the shit out of me.

I probably sound like an entitled shit, but why does this game look so much worse than other NES games? The artwork is MS Paint level, no textures, no structures. I know the NES can do better, it did in plenty other games. This looks like interns worked on this.

It was a famicom launch title, they were just starting to learn what their machine was capable of. They were making basic games like popeye and golf at the time, which still looked miles better than anything a gen2 console had done up till that point.

Please tell me I'm not crazy, but from the games I've played, Pinball Arcade has RNG physics.

Lemme explain, out of ten games, nine I have are godawful because it either goes straight down the middle or falls off to the sides, but the one game I had in those ten games is phenomenal even for Leaderboard standards.

So are Pinball Arcade's physics completely random? Its not skill based?
>>
>>2738281
No, they're just bad. This kinda thing happens in real pinball to me. I'll play like shit round after round then randomly I'll play like I'm fucking Tommy.

No, the physics are sound. They're not hyper-realistic, but they're sound.

The problem you're having seems like you just need to get a bit more precision on your shots, or you're playing a dick table and happen to avoid the nasty places every once in a while.

I don't think it is an overrated table. Looking at the top 100 tables on pinside and I see a lot of shitty tables ranked higher than creature up there but at least you have reasons for not liking it.

As it is my all time favorite table though, let me offer some counterpoints to yours...
>Move Your Car is probably the easiest challenge in pinball history
Getting your car started isn't terribly difficult but you still need to hit the ball up there between the ramp and snack bar. The hard part is maximizing the score for it and being able to hit it up there quickly and consecutively.
>Snackbar is so full of random shite outside that its near impossible to hit
I don't fully understand this but snackbar can definitely be a hard shot if you are using the right flipper. Try backhanding it up the ramp to get to your left flipper for an easier shot.
>Hologram, the "WOW" factor of the table pops up for two seconds
Personally I find it is a really cool gimmick that doesn't interfere with the gameplay and fits with the art style and theme quite well.
>Larger gap
It sucks when it drains but I think this adds to the difficulty of the table and tests your nudging skills.
>Not based on the ACTUAL FUCKING MOVIE
Come on, if you have played it you know its suppose to be a cheesy drive-in movie joke.
>>
>>2741643
>Not based on the ACTUAL FUCKING MOVIE
This again?
It is about the movie, it's also about GETTING to the movie by way of a classic 50's drive-in movie experience. It's a theme within a theme, after you rack up your points you start the movie then you're rescuing your chick from the creature, there's your mode based on the movie itself. It's pretty fucking ingenious the way it incorporated 50's teen rock n roll drive in culture with a licensed movie of the era.
There are shit-tons of just straight up movie licensed tables, CFTBL actually did something original and unique.
It's a fucking blast to play.
>>
>>2739507
Still waiting, its my 7th try now
>>
>>2741459
The Shadow might also but Creature definitely has the larger gap.

The rules are fairly cryptic. The bonus carries over but can reset to 2x from 6x since it also spots a FILM letter. FILM completed in sequence grants 8 million bonus. Start 2-ball multiball and you've got to find the Creature then rescue the girl then increase jackpots by spiraling around the vortex and somehow eventually get to Super Jackpots in the (snackbar?)

It's hard to tell where the FILM shots are on the table. You can cheese F by blowing slowly past the skill shot down to the left flipper. All sorts of things like that.

Lots going on in the game.
>>
>>2741643
>he's never found the Creature
>>
>>2742792
You can skillshot F by watching KISS light up and plunging back all the way at the right time. You should probably always do this on the first ball but if I mess up with spelling FILM in order I usually just just go for lighting PAID instead regardless of if I have L.

Snackbar is the hardest or most dangerous to get. For those not aware, you are trying to light all 4 blue targets in front of the snackbar scoop. Hitting pop bumpers will cycle which ones are lit and shootings the scoop will automatically light one. The scoop is definitely the safest but is hard to hit with the right flipper so I'll hit the targets on the left if they both aren't lit, otherwise I'll backhand it up the right ramp to the left flipper for the scoop.

I think a lot of people have tables like Twilight Zone and Medieval Madness on their dream lists, and those typically run that high

Setting my sights a bit lower, I'd be thrilled with a Power Play, Captain Fantastic, or Genie. I love the early SS era. Those seem to run around from 2-5k around here nowadays

I figure half of it is from being around NYC, and the other half is the market bubble.
>>

>>
>>2745059
half of what makes a table good and memorable is an interesting theme

ive never been a fan of modern stern and their need to connect every table with whatever the flavor of the month is, but i guess that's what sells. in the short term, at least

not that licensed themes are automatically bad. i fuckin love the original KISS table. but did we really need another one in 2015?

>>2745145
Can you elaborate on the difference you experienced?
>>
>>2745147
There are a lot of differences that add up but the two main things are how easy it is to nudge the ball the way you want and how strong the flippers are to launch the ball up the left ramp.

It's still a great way to learn the rules of a table though.

Jesus christ how can you even need to ask this? Pinball arcades physics is shit and massively simplified over the real deal, irl you are dealing with variables of spin, bounce, speed changes etcetc with pinball arcade you are dealing with dumbed down everything and a preset nudge to abuse easily. I agree, except for I do enjoy LotR and see it as one of the few exceptions to Stern's usual garbage.

Almost all of their tables feel cheap and an uninspired cash in on licensing (see all their tables). Keefer definitely made some deep rules for them but it's wasted on shitty themes or bad table design so it's nice he's with JJP now.
>>
>>2750370
A place I frequent here in Sydney has nothing but Stern tables, the first time I walked in I was excited to see the LotR table due to its reputation but I find myself playing and enjoying the other Sterns more.
The Star Trek LE is absolutely beautiful and feels solid and well made. The best table Stern has produced?
I think Spiderman is a great table and better than Rings.
Metallica I didn't like at first despite being a fan, but it's grown on me and I think playing the LE improved my opinion of it.
X-Men, another that I disliked but with time grown to really enjoy.

Maybe because I was never a Tolkien fan or something. I know I'm being harsh on it but it has such a high rep and I can't get into it and it does feel like another "cheap Stern"

Star Trek LE is definitely my other favorite Stern and does feel solid and well made. And I'm not a fan of the show.

Metallica and ACDC aren't that great in my opinion but don't feel as cheap as a lot of the other ones. KISS isn't too bad either if you've had a chance to play it. Spiderman I don't care for and X-Men is straight up terrible though.

Lots of people seem to like Tron but I haven't been able to get into it.

Not him but I would consider quality and good craftsmanship to be basically the same thing. Originality could be applied to the theme (so not stern) but also table layout, toys, or other gimmicks that haven't been seen before. Design could be artwork or design of the table and how it all flows together. That's how I would define them but maybe they meant something else.
>>
>>2750740
I figured craftsmannship is the physical precision of the table, while quality is something regarding its layout, rules, consistency of theme, loose stuff like that? While design is more about the creativity involved, I suppose. As I said, these terms seem hazy to me, so I'm looking for a bit more info

So i'm trying to set up Visual Pinball on my father's PC that has a 1920x1080 monitor but when i try to change the screen options the max resolution that VP shows is 1280x720,is there a way to pick different resolutions?
>>
>>2751119
What version are you using?
>>
>>2751119
>>2751239
Nevermind i just needed to change the screen text size back to 100% under screen resolution
>>

Tron is good looking table but I just don't think the "flow" is there. The positioning of the ramps and pops seem a bit odd.
>>
Everyone acting like Sterns are built in an inferior manner should complain to Churchill Custom Cabinets / Chicago Gaming Company since they make all the playfields and cabinets and artwork for all Bally / Williams / Data East / modern Stern pins to this day.

Of course, it's the same method and materials and quality that B/W tables had. But people can't understand deep rules so they hate Stern and say the tables are cheap.
>>
>>2751969
Who the fuck assembles them then, the pinball fairies?
Who is responsible for the electronics?
How about we blame the fucking trees for providing Stern with inferior wood for their pinball tables?
Industries change and so do their methods, you can't compare the current manufacturing to what it was 20 years ago.
Fuck off Gary, the quality on your Stern tables is fucking apparent.

Oh that must be the reason. I should go back to playing games from the 70s where the build quality was better... I mean the same... and I can understand the rules.

How about you compare the two Indiana Jones games?

Hm, never considered emulating pinball before (besides a bunch of classics collections released on consoles) but you guys have intrigued me with Visual pinball 10/ physmod5.

Also stuck in Toronto and they closed down the pinball room at union station years ago. Life is pain. Although not TOO far away we have http://www.thechurchofthesilverball.com/index.htm

>He thinks it's just the wood that makes a table cheap.
No, it's the cheap plastics, toys, and bare minimum that Stern puts out.

>>2752361
I don't care who designed it. If you played both tables, one feels like a cheap piece of shit but I guess you couldn't tell since they are of the same quality.

>looking up some pinball machines
>"this game is LIGHTNING FAST!"
>watch a video of it
>it grabs the ball and hold it to play a voice clip and flash lights
>kicks it out after a few seconds
>this happens after every-other shot

Why can't machines be more simple? I don't care about the gimmicks. I want the ball to keep rolling.
>>
>>2761589
What game are you referring to? I agree sometimes it can really slow the game down but I think the idea is for the game to allow you to look at the screen and tell you about a mode or something happening.
>>
>>2761713
Probably Whitewater.
I hate that kickback too.

No such game exists, he's probably exaggerating a magnet-heavy Stern table like X Men or Iron Man

You are probably better suited to older tables them particularly EMs.

http://www.pinballarcade.com/TablePacks/

So if I wanted to get a table pack for my Pinball Arcade, which season was best? Keep in mind I'm just a pinball casual.
>>
>>2763641
I'm not familiar with how the table packs work. Is this the phone version of the game? I thought you just buy them by season but I guess I would get 1>2>4>3>10 to start
>>
>>2763641
The best tables are generally front-loaded towards the earliest packs. The earlier packs are also the best value, because that's before Farsight realized they frontloaded their tables and jacked up the prices. Go with Table Pack 1 and 2, then you'll probably want to pick and choose individual tables from there.

PROTIP: don't buy an individual table until you consistently hit the trial score. If you suck, you play free forever!

No, he is one of the best pinball players in the world. In the full video he is explaining how to play Tommy and after doing so he played a ball with one hand just for fun.
