New Umihara Kawase thread again because starting the other one with a webm with a black image as a preview was a bad idea.

What's the best game and field in the series?

If anyone is curious about the source for those webms, I converted them awhile back when the format was allowed for 4chan. They are from this compilation of Umihara material. http://www.mediafire.com/?6j21i8vw37fc7#6j21i8vw37fc7

Oh fucking fuck how
Can anyone here actually do that shit
>>
I was good at Worms roping, but this is some different level stuff.
I tried this game and got destroyed by it.
Gotta give it a try again someday.
>>
>>2070153
I'm good at aottg and I can't rope for shit in this game. Still haven't beaten any of them.
BTW, does the 30 minute rule still apply to the PS1 and DS Umihara Kawase?
>>
>>2070169
>BTW, does the 30 minute rule still apply to the PS1 and DS Umihara Kawase?
It does in the DS version, I was kicked into the last field several times after spending too much time on some pre-crab fields.
>>
>>2070169
Yes, I have no idea if it's in the 3DS one though.
>>
I used to be pretty good

When I played Umihara Kawase Shun I was able to loop myself around to the first level in about 24 minutes or so

didn't seem to find an actual ending door with credits like the SNES version, maybe I just didn't keep at it enough

I'd get absorbed in the more insane time eating levels with long trap corridors or slide shenanigans
>>
>>2069159
I think one of my favorite fields is the one in SNES with the bridge that breaks, you can attach your line to the end of it as it swings to increase your momentum and fling yourself to the upper right corner where there's a ledge you can't even see unless you launch yourself that way, with a secret exit door to boot

I also really liked how some of the fields were like, other fields flipped completely upside down, so you'd die if you didn't throw your line with perfect timing at the start, because you'd fall off the top (bottom?) of the map
>>
>>2070842
I think you're mixing two levels up. There is one with a breakable bridge, but the level with the hidden door at the very top right is in one of the school of fish boss levels.

They're all good except the PSP port. Fans of the series rank them all differently. If you wanted to emulate Umihara Kawase Shun before buying Yumi's/Sayonara that might be a good idea, Shun's physics are closer to Sayonara. I personally like the original the most.

Shun's physics are pretty much copy/pasted from SFC, the only difference is the rope's shorter length which allows for better movement control.

On the other hand Sayonara's rope is much more slower, with completely different engine.

I would just like to bring the attention to this really old /vr/ post: https://archive.moe/vr/thread/833246/

This thing saved me from a lot of grievances, you don't need 100MB+ files to listen to old games OSTs, which are hard to hunt and are probably going to be ultra-compressed, it's way better having foobar or winamp synthesising the music on the fly, it sounds better and for the most part each song isn't more than a couple of measly KB.

Take the Umihara Kawase example:
http://snesmusic.org/v2/profile.php?profile=set&selected=15165

>51KB

You know this is true. The games are mediocre at its best. You can't rely only on the shooting mechanic for so long. The graphics are terrible, the story is non existant, and there's no charm to the characters/enemies, it's just robots.

>>2099153
The first two games have an invisible 30 minute timer. If you clear a field after the 30 minutes have passed, you are sent to a randomly decided ending field. And no, you aren't punished for taking a wrong path. The only bad door to take is one in the PSX game that sends you back to floor 0.

How would you like your credit? I put my own name in ASCII to an unreferenced part of the ROM so if you open the ROM in a Hex Editor, you might see who's behind the hack.

Did you mean like, into the real credits? Or in a separate readme.txt? And what name? Princess Sevenleaf?
>>
>>2104845
I was gonna say put my name in the readme file, but you make it sound like you don't have a readme. Don't just hide your name inside the ROM, that's way too humble. People need to realize good rom hacks don't just materialize in dark corners of the internet; they're created by people. People like us. We've created something of beauty, and you need to OWN it.
>>
>>2104857
I don't feel the same way. In fact, I find the act of signing any of my work somewhat repulsive.
But I will add you to the real credits roll if you want/I'm able.
>>
>>2104993
I have to agree. Just write it somewhere in the ROM or mention it on the site you plan to release it on.
>>
Okay the hack's done. Not much to say here, but a few things:
• The doors no longer have effect on your path. This hack essentially makes you play through all 49 levels. This is the main 'thing' of the hack.
• Because the game is now way longer, to compensate the added challenge the 30-minute rule is no longer there (thanks, Princess Sevenleaf) and you start with 50 lives.
• Two of the unused enemies (the Puffer Fish and the Catfish) are featured in their respective levels. You have to play 'til you find them though.
• Save the hack and the next time someone makes a UK thread or a Rom Hacking thread, post the link. I usually don't keep things too long so if my mediafire account gets deleted or shit just dropbox it or something.

http://www.mediafire.com/download/855s2bw6dog6pav/Umihara_Kawase_2_Journey.smc

Sure, the game's now as linear as it gets, but at the same time it's the ultimate sightseeing and a tough challenge. I expect you to post your final scores.

Nice job Anon
But can we have an alternate hack with just the 30 minute rule removed?
Or even better an options menu to enable/disable certain features of those.
>>
>>2105485
No, because there was contribution to the project here.
>>
>>2105413
Well, you could make a Game Genie code easily
>>
>>2105348
I realize its more work (probably a lot more?) but if you can make it into an ips patch file or whatever the cool kids use these days, places like romhacking.net would host it indefinitely.
>>
>>2105530
ips patches are easy to make, it's basically the same process as applying a patch, but in reverse.

This

there should be a way to bypass this and the flying fish field as these are the 2 most difficult levels in the whole series

So I found out that every time you die, you're penalized 20 seconds. So it IS theoretically possible to run out the "infinite" timer, if you die 90 times.

It's easily fixed, but starting with 50 lives makes it a non-issue. Are there even 40 backpacks in the game?

Man, do you even want a high score in umihara games? Maybe it's more like golf. If you're slowing down to actually capture enemies, doesn't that make you not AS FAST?

Although I guess if you're godlike you can capture enemies while mach hopping. Do we have an official term for that yet?

Second guy is right, that score is from me getting bogged down in respawning enemies and going slow.

Often its best not to capture the regular enemies in a level because that allows the game to then start the random spawning enemies.

Oh my god, this game brings on the ultimate nostalgia for me. Back in 1994 me and my father moved to japan for the winter because of some business deal his work made or something. First week there we mostly had fun going to the fishing ponds and some of the arcades in the morning and then walking around trying to get to know the area. Few days later after coming home from temp school dad started telling me about a cool game system that was like a home arcade machine called a Super Famicom that he heard about at his new job. Started to beg for one for christmas as the days went on. Then comes the 22nd. After fishing at a pond I'm told I have to stay up super late tonight for an un-told reason. Around 11 at night I'm told to get my stuff on and get into the car. Half an hour later we stop at a store that stays open late and sells games. We walk around a bit and look a some games and beg to get a few. Finally at midnight we get in line and I jump for joy when my dad had the clerk grab a sfc off the shelf and Super Mario World. The Clerk also pulled out a big shipping box and out came a copy of Umihara Kawase. Needless to say we spent the whole next day playing Umihara and Mario. Best early Christmas ever.

Its naivety in the west to think that. In the East, the swastika is viewed mostly as a symbol of luck and other religious purposes. A few years of war in the west isn't going to change thousands of years of their tradition.

I have the DS version and it is the best version of both the SFC and PSX games. Slowdown present in the SFC game has been removed and now the timer measures to centiseconds. It has a remixed soundtrack, however, and some songs now play in different levels. The PSX game had a few doors and levels added to it, and the map on the bottom screen is helpful. Pretty much the only downside is the lower resolution.
>>
>>2156187
Me too. It makes the whole game seem somber and kinda cold. Like a dreary overcast autumn day.

I think that's a big part of what drew me into the game initially, was its palette choices. You rarely see those kind of "earthy" colors in a game from that era, usually it's about making everything as flashy and colorful as possible.
>>
>>2157720
Theyre, in fact, actual photographs and judging by the compression, originally GIFs.
>>
>>2158102
Anon please the SNES has a limited palette, obviously they would need to be compressed to make its way to the SNES.

And GIFs have nothing to do with this. If it was black and white photography GIFs can use all 256 shades of grey necessary to save them without any compression.

New to Umihara Kawase. I recently bought Sayonara Umihara Kawase on the eShop and I've been enjoying it so far.

Though, I was wondering how is this player able to latch onto the upper platform in this video around the 9 second mark? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bQr4o-6zOWU

Is it because he has momentum before he jumps? I can't seem to reach it while I'm jumping.
>>
>>2161501
You see how around the 11-12 second mark of the video, when he shoots his line while he's still in the air and once he lands he jumps again pretty much straight away? That's how he was able to reach it.

Not as fast, but you can also stand on the right side of that platform, jump, shoot your line diagonally right at the very top of the jump and jump again immediately after landing, and if you've timed everything right you'll reach it.
