Iris was an attempt to do another Misty. Problem is, after DP an Ash/Misty dynamic doesn't work because of how mature Ash was supposed to be at that point. XY should have really come after DP. Ash's maturity makes sense, and Serena's love for Ash because of that maturity makes sense as well.
At this point only Ash/Dawn type dynamics would work if you want to go the platonic route and Ash/Serena if you want the romance route.
