Dawn Contest arc also ended before Ash's last gym, I don't see anything wrong with it.
Seems like no companion will have more than 3-4 pokemon nowadays:
Brock in AG/DP only had 3 pokemon at a time
Iris only had 4 pokemon in BW
Cilan only had 3 pokemon
Serena only has 3 pokemon
Clemont only has 3 pokemon on his party not counting the ones on the Gym.
The last characters to have a lot of pokemon were May and Dawn, who both had 7 pokemon total during their runs. Which makes sense since they battled the most and had the most Contest episodes.

Its pretty funny when you stop to realize Misty's been gone for 70% of Ash's adventures.. Misty turned out to be such a low-key and short lived character on Ash's journey. She has no idea all the accomplishments, pokemon he's captured, and rivals he's had in all the following series. She's also never met any of his friends after May and Max.
The writers really did go out of their way to purposely bury Misty's character for the rest of the series. It just really puts into perspective how stupid some fanboys were for ever thinking she would return to the show.

Sometimes I think May got into the wrong profession. She was like a battler who did Contests even though she's not really into performing. She won most of her Contest battles by KOing her opponent as if she was in regular battles. She also seems strong enough that she could potentially challenge Gyms if she wanted to.
