Although IIRC Pokemon did place 3rd in Bandai's survey in 2013 when Episode N was being broadcasted... 2014 was when Pokeani took a big nosedive in merch preferences (It placed 8th in bandai survey, its lowest in almost 19 years). IIRC, a company who makes furniture for young children made a survey, and Pokemon failed into getting in top 10 preferences of favorite characters/series.
Audience is pretty stable though. After the big nosedive it got after Froakie's evolution, it was pretty stabilized with only 2 lows in normal days (2,7% and 2,4%).
When people say "it's how it's presented" in the scene with Ash falling on Serena in terms of being hentai-ish, what do what do they mean? There have been other lewd things in Pokemon before.

So how do Japanese fans react to a highly promoted ship not becoming canon? Do they overreact as much as western fans?
If the writers really do have Serena leave at the end of XY and abandon the ship, what reaction would this get out of the Japanese fanbase? Do you think the writers realize they've gone too far with the ship that the Japanese fandom wouldn't accept it being axed?

A lot of the battles are quite good though. It also has the most amount of battling of any league, I don't know how the writers did it. Its the only league where Ash gets three 6 on 6 battles, and he also had a lot of 2 on 2 matches before that.
I also like how the other trainers used some classic pokemon like Machamp, Gligar, Girafarig, Venemoth, Golduck, Shiftry, Donphan, Persian, Dugtrio, etc.
A lot of pokemon we rarely see in big league matches were in the Hoenn league.

Personally the lack of any "important" rivals didn't matter to me, at the time I just wanted to see his Hoenn pokemon battle and most of the battles themselves were good so I didn't care. Likewise the Hoenn league wasn't the end of AG either, the Battle Frontier arc was...so its not like that was the climax of that series.
I figure the reason the writers didn't have Ash use reserves in the league is because they knew they were going to have him bring his old pokemon back in Battle Frontier right after.
