I think XYZ 29 with the Charizard for data broadcast is going to be the real start of the Team Flare arc.
Ash and Alan will have fought twice now establishing their relationship and now they can progress the story with Puni-chan and Bluni-chan.
What I'm really curious about though is what happens immediately after Wulfrics Gym Battle. It appears to be that Ash wins on his first try, so during that episode we should learn where the Kalos League is going to take place.
If it's towards Lumious City, we might see the TF arc climax take place within the city which would give reason to believe that this is where we could see Shota get his Sceptilite and Blaziken Masks true role in the anime.

6 v 6 battles should be 2-3 episodes similar to the Ash VS Paul at the Sinnoh League or Gary VS Ash at the Silver Conference.
Anything below that should be able to be done in 1 episode. I expect Ash VS Shota at the League to be 2 episodes, 3 at the most. Ash VS Tierno to be a single episode, maybe 3 if they meet in the top 16 depending on the League layout.
If I remember right I think back during AG we had a 6v6 gym battle that lasted 2 episodes for the 8th Gym in Sootopolus.
The only battle that doesn't stand by this rule is the Ash VS Tobais match, but that was a blowout for Tobais.

I feel like Serena got lucky being girl #5 and being introduced so late in the animes history. May and Dawn could be axed because despite how popular they were the show was still doing well and they knew they could get away with it and continue the series with new girls.
But after Iris and BW, it feels like Serena was a "safe" choice at first...almost a throwback to Dawn. Then they went one step further with the ship and then Amour exploded around XY59-60 and they've gone that route ever since.
