Yeah, but that's the thing. Yashio is an old veteran that knows how these things work. The old league veterans like Elite Four members and champions are happy people emphasizing the value of bonding with your Pokemon, Yashio is a bitter bitch seemingly emphasizing the absence of personal enjoyment.
The league is about what you and your Pokemon can do, while Tripokalons are about how others see you and your Pokemon, so to be successful in the latter you need to focus on pleasing the audience over anything else.
