The 2x2 layout was better because it was big and bold and easy to see. This makes things smaller and less detailed. If they had retained the same 2x2 design, they could have added more information to the buttons since they are bigger, but instead, they shrunk them down into a vertical list that takes up half of the screen, so there must be a reason for recovering that screen realestate.

Just up and down to select moves means faster inputs without needing right and left too. Plus all the moves on one side is easier for touch selection.
