When it crashes, wait a moment for the pokeball loading icon to disappear. After a few seconds it will appear one more time, and after it disappears the second time, it should be saved and you can now close and reopen the app. Your Pokémon should appear under the Pokémon section, as the glitch only ever happens after a successful capture.
