I'm betting the majority of people here started from the beginning, with the second largest group being Hoenn. Probably only a handful of people in the other categories.

I know because I was too much of a poorfag and lived in the middle of nowhere, so my first game was LeafGreen despite being a fan of the franchise since 1999.
Started on Yellow in '99. Went to Silver, back to Blue, forward to Ruby, spent most of my time on Sapphire, only completed Diamond once, skipped Heart Gold and Soul Silver, played the first half of Black in an emulator, and now spend most of my Pokemon time modding Emerald and Fire Red.

This is exactly what happened to me. I begged my parents for a Game Boy and Blue but never got it. But years later I got an SP and LeafGreen for Christmas. The only Pokemon I'm missing in it are Ho-oh and Deoxys.

First was red when I was ... 9 I think. Wish I had here a photo of my pokemon school diary to show you. In all honestly, the only thing I like about GO is that it's at least partially rekindling the pokemania. If you didn't live the late 90s and early 2000s you really can't understand how it was. Shit was tight.
I can't remember if it was Ruby or Sapphire, but I played it on an emulator twelve years ago at age 8. To this day I never knew why I stopped playing the moment I hit Ever Grande city.

My first core game was pokemon red although it was in 2003. I didn't have a gameboy and only ever owned pokemon stadium 1 so I played using the gba tower. I wanted to be able to play the games in order and so far I have so thats cool guess.
It's a pity about my red cartridge though, when I was about 12 I got back into after reading about the mew glitch, restarted and caught mew and just kept abusing the glitch (catching a lvl 7 Blastoise was pretty sweet) but fucked my game up catching either 'M or Missingno. which caused Mr Fuji to disappear in the Pokemon Tower, then progressing to me getting stuck in the hotel in one of the cities and finally the game just not working anymore....
