Greninja is the most popular starter since Charizard, who is fucking 1st gen.
They have favored other starters before, but none stuck as well as Greninja and I doubt they can replicate that for a while.

Acutally no. Greninja was already winning fan polls ever since december 2013 (just after XY's release). See IGN & Dorkly polls, Greninja made a hot shot to #1 easily. And the Froakie line has been huge in japan since the early reveal of the first stages.
Smash & the anime only further cemented its popularity. It wasn't forced like Zoroark.
