Honestly the easiest way for you to beat the gym is to grind Wilson to 20, and let him evolve. Raticate gets the fangs when it evolves, But level 20 would be kind of op for the first gym.

I usually go to around lvl18 for the first gym, that rotation battle hurts too much otherwise.

Don't be afraid to grind. Also try to use repels sometimes to access more interesting catching areas. Potions are your friends so stock on them. Try to have a balanced team when possible. Switch a lot.
Play with Set mode if you're not a faggot

also in TPP anni crystal, you get thief as a tm pretty early, which is really useful. And tm's are unlimited use (took me a couple of runs to figure that out)
stealing leftovers from trainers (usually gym leaders/executives/bosses) is great
and what really helps is stealing a lucky egg from a chansey

It depends. If you don't really care about variety, be a nuzlocke purist and count pokemon by route.
If you like being forced to play a larger variety of pokemon, keep it.
How do I stop cheating at nuzlockes?
If I pokemon dies, I just restart
If I fail to capture a pokemon, I just catch the next one
ANYTHING bad that happens, I just restart or ignore it

Can I get an opinion on a ruling?
If a Pokemon uses self-destruct, does that count as it dying? I know the rule is "if a Pokemon faints, it is considered dead", but it seems odd that Pokemon who are literally known for self-destructing (Electrode, for example) aren't able to use their signature move.
My personal opinion is that a Pokemon gets one free self-destruct. Everything after that is a suicide bombing (because if Self-Destruct simply didn't count as a death, it'd be easy to abuse).
What are your personal opinions? Obviously the letter of the law is "if fainted, then dead", but I want some interpretations.

For trainers you want to tick the similar strength option, no legendaries and perhaps no early Wonder Guard. You could choose force fully evolved so you don't reach the champion with babymons.

I actually did it. Chicken and Potato did beautifully in this game, especially Potato for surviving the whole journey from level 5 to 63.
R.I.P. Nectarine and Dough, they get special spots in Valhalla. Nectarine died to rain-boosted critical Hydro Pump from Milotic while Dough died to Machamp's Dynamic Punch. Both Milotic and Machamp were bastards Chicken had to take care of.
