leveling and evolving gives the same stats as evolving and then leveling
This means that you want to evolve FIRST so you can see what random moves your pkmn got, and if they're good then train it.
right now, with everyone being no where near the trainer level cap, its almost always better to do flat evolutions and NO leveling - because you'll just waste stardust and find something in the wild that is stronger

Despite what some people might say, the amount of candy and stardust is strictly based on how far along the "cp semicircle" your Pokemon is. Evolving it will not make it cost more candy to max out, so do it in whichever order.
As for which to keep, I always just keep the one with the most semicircle progress. Things like size and weight are re-randomized upon evolution, and can go up when Powering Up anyway, so don't let those be factors.

Northern Florida at a mall, near a couple pokestops.
Despite the worst freezing since the game's release, I got a good haul today. I found out that a Jynx spawns in a random, tiny, secluded park near my house every half hour or so. Even better, there's a bike trail around a lake barely more than a mile from home. Tons of Pokéstops that refresh in the time it takes me to make a loop, countless Magikarp for that Gyarados grind, and it's the closest, most reliable spot I've discovered to hunt for my favorite Pokémon family: Dratini. I biked there a lot last year when I was working part time: going to start working it into the routine whenever possible.
So many good gits from tonight couldn't choose.
Favs are from today, not bad for only a few hours out

Pokemon require stardust and candies to train and just candies to evolve. You get these candies by catching pokemon of a specific line. The Pidgey line gets Pidgey candy, Schyther gets Schyther candy and so on. The amount of candy needed to evolve depends on the stage of the pokemon. Pidgey needs 12, Pidgeotto needs 50. For a two stage pokemon like Goldeen and Seaking, Goldeen needs 50. Evolving also rewards you experience and stardust.
If you use a lucky egg which doubles the exp you recieve for 30 minutes and mass evolve a ton of pokemon at once, you'll soar up the levels. I forget what level you get your first lucky egg. You'll figure it all out with experience.

Hatched the Lapras yesterday. So happy with it. Takes down all the red and blue gyms around me.

Caught a 477 CP Growlithe and evolved it into pic releated. Also caught a Flareon.
Caught a better Golduck with water moves and a better Kabutops with Ground/Rock, but I really value these psychic moves, I think he was today's best for me, although I had a looooot of good stuff caught today.

The damage of the moves are literally right there on the profile of the pokemon you dolt. See for yourself which is better than others. The only strategic aspect of fighting inherited from the other games is type advantage. So forget about Speed, STAB and all that other shit.

Is it just me or "rare" pokemon aren't all that rare. Of course the legendary ones no one has seen yet but it seems like everyday I'm catching something that is super rare. And I come on here and everyone is catching something super rare just by walking around.
The old games were so addictive because how hard it was to catch something like an Aerodactyl, and you had to figure out puzzles to get certain items and past different areas.

Just farm pokestops for balls and catch everything. It builds up quick and you evolve weak stuff while using a lucky egg to power level. Also hatching real eggs helps with the dust boosts too.
