Gen 4. Transition to DS in form of DPP was already amazing but then HGSS happened. And let's not forget about PMD: Explorers of Time/Darkness/Sky.

Gen II took something *almost* perfect and made it perfect. 251 Pokémon was just enough to give the game a lifespan without feeling overbearing, it added a few more game mechanics to improve gameplay. It felt like a slightly more believable world, with the Lake of Rage, the metro, the Burned tower story etc. It is, for me, the quintessential handheld game.

Gen 5 and Gen 2 are the best. They both were innovate generations, had stories with some sort of longer continuity that the others, characters that were actually interesting (Silver and N), lots of post E4 content, and had some of the biggest OH SHIT moments in the series
