Nothing you can do about it. Poke nerds will flock to that gym trust me. The gym down the street from me, a park, usually empty, has been crowded since release.

Really? I live in Minneapolis, down the street from like 20 Pokestops and 6 gyms, and I've never seen a "wild" Pokemon Go player in that area. Just one skinny Fedora nerd roaming around in my apartment parking lot the other day.
