As somebody who is an actual adult that grew up playing each gen, I can without a doubt say gen 5 is by far the worst gen we've ever had. Easily.

The only legitimate praise I can give to gen 5 is that it has the best OST. That's literally it.
As somebody who had lost faith in Pokemon when gen 5 reared its ugly head, X&Y were a breath of fresh air and instilled some hope into me. Sure, ORAS sapped a portion of that hope away but at least Sun and Moon are shaping up to be pretty good.
Gen 6 as a whole isn't great, but X and Y are. I speak as somebody who, at first, was furious that we were getting such a tiny amount of new pokemon.
Color me surprised when almost the entire dex is filled with 8+/10 pokemon, minus 1-2 designs.

No, gen 6, specifically X and Y is the worst. Difficulty meme aside, once the luster of 3D wears off you can see it was a rushed, unpolished hackjob. They literally used a stand-in sprite for the gym leaders, E4, and champ, while random Team Flare grunts got models. The story is borderline incoherent, with multiple loose ends that are either left totally unsolved, or else hastily patched up in an infodump you can tell was slapped together a week before they needed a final copy. Characters are so poorly handled that there are at least 3 "literally who" moments that most players go through. One for Sycamore's assistants, one for Malva, and one for Diantha. The Gym leaders and E4 are unmemorable, and the evil team is the most poorly organized yet. Even Scattered Team rocket of Gen 2, and yes, even insane Team Plasma of BW2 had their shit together more than Team Flare.
By opposition, BW and BW2 are some of the most finely polished, well written, and well paced games in he series. They were jam-packed with optional caves and detours, and had an entire chunk of the map saved for "post game". BW fucked with the core structure of pokemon like nothing else has fucking dared, though Alola looks promising. The final battle was not versus the champion. Original Team Plasma had such a solid argument that GF's only way to keep them the bad guys was to make them controlled by a super-villain all along. The actions of every character not named Hugh made sense in the game. Little felt contrived because of the plot.
Designs are largely consistent between titles. There are shitmons, basedmons, edgemons, and googly-eye mons. This has not changed significantly between gens. Golurk, Hawlucha, Aggron, Garchomp, Tyranitar, and Rhydon are all good designs. Vanillite, Klefki, Bronzong, Chimecho, Unown, and Magnemite are all just objects with googly eyes stuck on them.
X and Y sucked professionally, whatever subjective opinion you might have.

Pacing was awful after the third gym, which is a shame because before that the pacing was great and I had the impression the game would be actually longer considering the 3DS has superior hardware to the DS and would probably handle a longer game.

I wouldn't call it the second coming but it's at the top of my list of gens I've enjoyed the most. The move to 3D visuals, a new type and mega evolutions made it feel fresh and exciting. XY regional dex had tons of variety for playthroughs, Kalos is an alright region with some nice locations and music.
Multiplayer is by far the best it's ever been. The PSS makes everything convenient, online battling has a proper ranking system, the myriad of breeding improvements made building teams easier and made trading more fun, being able to edit music for battles, wonder trade is great, etc.
gen 6 also has the most user friendly and fastest UI. Like, go back and use the box system in older gens, it's fucking atrocious by comparison. There are also heaps of other small things XY did that gave a lot of polish to the series.
The two biggest complaints seem to be difficulty and no post game. Difficulty doesn't even phase me since I've found every game in the series piss easy, I play other RPGs and strategy games for that. Lack of post game didn't bother me either because the first games of a gen never really have one, and I spent tons of time completing the national dex and playing online.

The only flaw Gen 5 has is that it's starters are absolute shit. Gen 6 probably has the best trio since the original games.
