I'm lvl 22 and there are still a lot of theories on how this game actually works. What does XL and XS mean and does it affect CP increase. How come my 1100 Vileplume only requires 1100 candy compared to Eevee 450cp needing 3000. How come some pokemon get +30cp when powered up when another pokemon only gets +9. Does weather affect pokemon spawn or affect an eevees evolution line. How come 2 mankeys caught within your same player level with the same CP have different lengths for max CP progression, is it XL XS?
im a lvl 18, i play in a very populated place with 50+ pokestops near me.. so theres a lot of traffic and a lot of talking. From what ive heard, XL & XS are the size of the pokemon, you can have 5 weedles that all weigh different amounts, the larger ones are slower and have more health; the smaller ones are faster and have higher speed.
the level as ive heard of the random pokemons are relative to a few things, first being what level you are and how many people have caught that pokemon before you. hope this helped

I've noticed common pokemon in the area are the same CP corresponding to your player level. I have a friend who stays around my level and when we find a pokemon it's the same level. They have the same weight from what I remember but the abilities are random. The only exception I've seen is rare pokemon. When a snorlax or lapras appears everyone gets complete random CP.

Nothing confirmed, I believe, but there's a lot floating around. The main ones I see are XL=Higher HP
XS=Faster attacker
Has no bearing on CP cap, as that's the same across all species.

It depends on how far along the progress bar they are and your level. If a Pokemon is near the far right of the bar and you're a high level, then they'll take a hell of a lot more than a pokemon near the far left or on a lower level trainer. The base CP score has nothing to do with it, just the % to cap.

Again, percentage to cap. A power up gives a Pokemon a boost to their cap and I'm sure it's % based. Higher cap means you get more CP per power up in order to get closer to the cap at the same rate.
The rest of your stuff, I don't know. Except the Eeveelution question. Eeveelutions are 100% random.

Yeah if multiple people from your team are attacking a gym you can see their pokemon appear. If you have a group of 4, they can each use 6 pokemon to gang up on the pokemon in the gym. it's a efficient way to clear high level gyms. XL and XS mean the Pokemon is either bigger or smaller than it usually is (XL weighted pokemon are fatties, XS height are midgets). Your Vileplume requires less stardust to level up probably because you caught it at a higher level. The white bar above the pokemon determines how far that Pokemon is from being maxed out. If you caught your eevee at cp10, the bar will reach the end at a lower cp than if you caught it at 100. The amount of stardust needed to level up is determined by how far the white bar is from the end. It can be completely random, so there is actually a lot of depth to Pokemon GO just like the main games

I know footprints tell you how close a pokemon is, but what does 3 footprints mean, like how far do you need to go?

From what I've noticed 3 steps can be either far and very far. I've chased a 3 step before. drove 4 blocks away and this guy still shows up on my radar. What's the deal with pokelures/incense? Do the pokemon that spawn depend on your location or is it random? Both lures and incense are programmed to occasionally spawn random strong or rare Pokemon. So if you're in a spot with more lures on, you increase your chances of having one spawn
Do 2 of the same pokemon max out at the same CP for your level. Or can one be higher than the other. I've had 4 gastleys before all within 20 CP of eachother. The lowest CP poke actually progressed further on his bar than the higher CP ones. If there is a cap, it would mean he would gain less CP per power up and the latter would gain more. If there isn't it cap, it would mean he is weaker and has less potential for growth.

To the people asking about footprints this is what ive gathered so far and it hasnt led me wrong yet.
0 prints means its on top of you so it should appear (duh)
1 print means its within 20m of you, as in between no footprint and 20 m of distance
2 means its past 20m but within 80m, so a 2 print pokemon could be anywhere from 21m to 80
3 prints means its past 80m but as far as a km, or a 1000m, so a 3 print mon will be between 80m and 1000m so unless its on the top 3 closest on my list i usually dont bother even trying to find it unless i have my longboard with me and i can get a beat on its direction

Also, Pokemon can grow into an evolution. An XL mon might become standard size upon evolving, nor not evolve to the proper size and become and XS.
Focus more on the moves than the height and weight. But that being said, even the moves can change upon evolution. Typically you won't lose a powerful special attack though, so shit like Flash Cannon and Flamethower are what you need to look out for.

Pidgey is a good Pokemon for leveling up catch 200 or so pidgey then use the candy to evolve as many times as you can (make sure to use a lucky egg before hand if you have one). I got lvl 19-20 in about 15 minutes doing this

I've done my own personal research and I have this to say. Keep in mind this is purely anecdotal, but this method has worked for me so far in catching some rare pokemon, like Dratini.
First thing when it comes to three steps. Your nearby pokemon should appear in a 3x3 grid. From left to right, starting from the top, is how close they really are.
What you can do to find the 3 steps is start walking in a random direction (my tip is to continue the direction you are already headed if you notice something rare just showed up, as it only showed up because you are headed in its general direction).
You should see the 3-step pokemon you want start moving to the left, then up as you get closer. If it goes back to the right or goes down, go to your left or your right. If it keeps going down or disappears, do not lose hope. Just turn around and go the other direction. It should start getting closer. Once it goes down to 2 steps, you are definitely on the right track and you can keep going in that direction. It might go back up to 3 or slide back to the right again, so just keep changing direction.
KEEP THE NEARBY SCREEN OPEN. Do not just click the pokemon and keep it in your screen on the bottom right corner. It will not give you enough information on its own to help you track the pokemon down. The key to tracking pokemon is to keep the entire nearby screen open and watch how the pokemon slides on the grid. Remember, you want it to go left and up.
A few things to take note of: Make sure your character is moving with you on the map. If they are standing still, restart your game. If you cannot see your level or any nearby pokemon, restart your game.
Restarting your game doesn't always guarantee a pokemon you are chasing will disappear. Wait and it should reappear 90% of the time.
Hit the cap with both and post results.

Honestly, if you can get a bike and find a place to hit up Pokestops rapidly, that seems to work better for higher levels. That 50 exp adds up when you're constantly hitting Pokestops and also lets you stockpile Great Balls and Ultra Balls.
