The playerbase will be much, much smaller, both in people normally dropping the game as time goes on, and people angry at them adding "fake" pokemon they don't recognize (gen 2+).

Gen 4 was when Genwunners started to crop up and become more vocal and the original fans would more or less have grown out of Pokemon so there would be a completely different fanbase if you compare Gen 1 and Gen 4. I've seen a hell of a lot more late teens and adults playing which are very likely non-fans who vaguely remember Gen 1 and only know pikachu/charizard which mean interest would drop once they're overwhelmed with the new Le edgy pokemon

GO will die with new pokémon. It will be harder to "catch them all" with more than 251 (Gen 2 might not even be fine), it will be harder to evolve and the players will shit on them, because everything after the beginning of the series, which was their experience as kids, it's fake, ugly, boring, pointless, not worth it. I liked all the evolution it added to dead end pokemon, made a lot of them feel more useful and meaningful.
Not to mention all the other great shit it did for pokyman, like introduce wifi and shit.
And Shinnoh itself is a pretty cool region, albeit a bit bland, and the Villain team was great!

Platinum is okay but overall Sinnoh is my least favorite generation. It has some ugly ass Pokemon, and a really tedious region that isn't really fun to explore. It's personally my least favorite generation.

I live in Florida, nearly all the people at my uni go hunting on campus at night
I cant wait for it to be colder, and those same students will take advantage of being on campus and catch pokemon on their way to and from class.
I feel like in a perfect universe this game would only get more popular/retain its popularity with the addition of new Pokemon.

Can't keep up anything like the current popularity of too many are introduced. People need a workable number to memorize so they know when a Pokemon is rare and worth bragging about.
Would work best if they introduced select Pokemon from later generations, chosen by a panel of genwunners.
