Climate diversity. First two gens were either cave, forest, or ocean with the limited palette of the gbc. GBA gave us a huge color palette and it was used to its fullest extent in hoenn with desert, volcano, ash debris, jungle tops, underwater, each island in hoenn was unique.
It felt like i was actually exploring and getting some where and seeing something new as i played the game.
Also introduced rival teams. which wasnt done before or since. which is good because it gives people one more thing to fight about which one is better.

That second one, definitely.
I never have actually played emerald, only Sapphire. When I first played it as a kid when it came out, I never even bothered beating the elite 4. After beating the gyms, I mainly just explored around to see everything, find rare mons, and figure out mysteries (regis, mirage island, that stupid white rock that ended up doing nothing etc). I also remember taking to the contests and breeding, but my fondest memories of back then were surfing the same routes over and over to see if I missed anything secret

Double battles in RS are implemented like shit, where you can only battle trainers specifically programmed to be a double battle and they never carry more than two Pokémon. This leads to the most pathetic Gym Leader battle in the franchise with RS Liza & Tate.

Emerald completely redid how double battles in the overworld work, where two trainers who happen to see you at the same time can join together, and they can potentially have up to a team of six, with you often battling trainers who each have 4-5 Pokémon. This makes double battles so much more interesting. It's probably the best non-postgame improvement Emerald brought overall.

It's part of why ORAS are so disappointing in my opinion, they went back to the shitty RS double battle model when even XY made use of spontaneous double battles. Even if you for some reason wanted to keep Tate & Liza's shitty RS team, why would you gimp the rest of the overworld battles like that?

Its just so much wasted potential you know? We could've had what made Emerald such a good game and added features on top of that and came up with one hell of a Pokemon game.
Instead we got gimped out on a lot of stuff and while I personally enjoyed it. It really could've been so much better.
