Happy to see Pokémon being this active. Kids, Teens, Adults and even old people are playing.
But I think half of the playerbase will quit when they put anything after Gen 2, and I'm really being optimistic here. This audience will not try "catching them all" with more that 251, or anything more than that. Also it will become a pain to evolve pokémon. So for me GO it's just a fad.

Having been to a Pokémon GO meetup this evening, I doubt it'll last.
About 90% of players really are the people who not only don't play the new games, but actively brag about how much they hate the new games. As soon as the GO hype runs out (which I don't expect to be more than six months or so), the sales of the regular games will be what they've always been.
It's still one of the most consistently well-selling series, to be fair.

I was one of them, but decided to buy Y/Alpha Sapphire and the new mons aren't bad honestly.. I've seen the truth. But I'm the minority here. Most people will indeed drop it after Gen 2. It would just be too many mons for them to catch.

The early gens of pokemon read like a loose mythological fable, with the legendary birds -> lugia (their leader) -> legendary dogs -> rayquaza (a dragon, and the end all be all of pokemon power); then there were god pokemon who could control all time and space and creation and they had like multiple forms and it just seems dumb to me.
Pokemon as simple and brilliant as Arcanine, Zapdos, Haunter, Raiku, Typhlosion, and Yanmega (aka Good butterfree) are so much better than things like arceas and deoxys to me.

Gen IV has a lot of stupid things going for it; like god pokemon. An exception to this rule is Yanmega.
Other 'ordinary' pokemon that are exceptions and are consistent with the universe that fit in the Gen one design space are the gen4 starters, bidoof, abamasnow, and wevile.
While manaphy, phione, arceas, regigigas, dialga, and palkia are all weird, and inconsistent with the universe. And they don't have a consistent design space. The complaint that they more resemble digimon or YGO monsters is valid at this point.
