The people in my town that REALLY put thought into playing Pokemon play on Instinct. Valor runs by in hordes and takes our gyms in the day, but we come out while they are sleeping just to take them again.
I really does vary by town. For example, Instinct in our town has more of a gym presence than Mystic.

Here, Mystic is normie and child bait. Also only rezlly have a few gyms here and there. Instinct is a bit unclear, own chunks of gyms, see the same names a lot. I leave them alone, Zapdos is my favourite of the three and they're alright. Valor is just a mismatched group, haven't met a single one yet but we own a majority of the gyms and some of them have ridiculously high combat power. I'm not gonna complain all the time I have 10 safe gyms though.
