Machamp's issues is he has a lot of trouble getting in. It doesn't matter if he can do 40% of your health in one hit if you can't make the hit to begin with.

General fighting strat

You're gonna have to mix it up depending on what character you are fighting, but one thing stays constant. Get synergy. Gengar relies on synergy more than pretty much every other character, it seems. Gengar's grab does shit damage, but heals and builds synergy, so get those grab reads. Also, in dual phase, occassionally throw out curse if you read them going for a ground based attack. Don't overuse it since it costs HP, but it does shitloads if it hits and it builds synergy even on whiff.
In field, use all your projectiles and be a huge cunt. If they try to approach you, you can attempt to "counter" them with back X (strong attack). The move is slow as shit, but it nullifies some projectiles and has a big ass hitbox around Gengar. Good to use against people on wakeup since they won't be able to punish it.
In dual phase, if you manage to put someone into a hard knock down, charge up a shadow ball over them. Unless they have a move with invincible start up like Lucario or Pikachu, they are limited to 3 options: Block, Counter Attack, and getting hit. If they block, you can do anything you want since you have frame advantage. If they counter attack the shadow ball, you get a free critical grab/hypnosis. If they get hit, you can confirm off it for a combo.
If you put them into soft knock down, try going for charged X (strong attack). It'll break through counter attacks on wake up (barring one frame ones like Lucario/Pikachu's "shoryukens") and if you time it right, will beat out regular attacks. Speaking of, on wake up you can use high stance Y (weak attack) as a bootleg Shoryuken. It's not safe, but it has a SHITLOAD of invul.
If the opponent tries to zone you in duel, you gotta pressure them hard with shadow punch and shadow ball. You can combo from midscreen if you hit them with a fully charged shadow punch.
Also, learn how to Astonish Loop, especially off Y (weak attack).

Oh, learn to use Gengar's hold charges, as they are both very useful. Hold charge X (strong attack) is pretty fast and builds synergy with the taunt at the end. If you use it and they block, you can cancel it with L or jump to make it safer. Hold charge A (Sludge Bomb) is even more useful. It has counter properties on the sides, so it beats a lot of other attacks. Also, its useful for movement since Gengar floats when using it in the air and can be moved. Also, the attack drop it causes can safe your life against characters like Machamp and Garchomp.
For assists, I personally like Croagunk/Sylveon since Croagunk's trap is effective with Gengar's moveset and Sylveon can save your life, but an easy safe choice is Cresselia since it gives a lot of synergy and health, Gengar's big weaknesses. For more offense, Mismagius, Ninetales, Diglett, and Cubone all work.
In burst, don't swing around wildly. Attack smart. Use high stance X and angle it to punish attack attempts. Don't use your special offensively, but rather defensively. Make them afraid to push buttons. Mega Gengar is fucking stupid, so abuse his bullshit. X has invul frames. YY has hits that last so long, it can beat counter attacks. His grab range is basically doubled and does stupid damage. Low stance X hits full screen low. In field phase, tapping Y with breaks in between lets you fill the screen in smog. If they try to jump/counter attack it, give 'em the laser.
Oh, this applies to both Gengar's forms, YY can be used as a gimmick trick. YYY/YYA end with shadow ball, but you can use other Pokemon Attacks instead. YY into hypnosis works if they don't attack or jump. YY into curse works if they attack. YY into shadow punch adds pressure and can wall splat. YY into jumping Y beats a lot of attacks. In burst, if you land the hypnosis variant, you get a free (scaled a bit though) special.

Learn when you need to use Overheat and when it's not a necessity. Zoning is pretty important, but if you know exactly when to disrupt an opponents flow with a well-timed Overheat it can put them on tilt.

To play Machamp well you NEED to play perfect, and consistantly. It's very easy to rely on moves that cover multiple options or simply zome spam Machamp out, but if you have mastered CADC and can get into your opponent's mind you MIGHT be able to use him in competion. I main Machamp, and as frustrating as it is he made me a much better player. It's very easy to tell who is bad when you play as Machamp.

I've played the game at a friends house for a while now and i've come to a conclusion based on the following:
Though i love the concept and a fighting game with Pokemon is something i've wanted for a long time, it seems to be pretty darn devoid of substantial content. The game itself seems pretty open for sequel possibilities, and if we can have one that improves in most aspects and adds more things to do, then i'd be all up for it.
The problem is that while i'm intrigued by sequel possibilities and want to support such a future, i don't want to buy a game i'm going to honestly spend only a few hours playing only for it to be worthless in the end. So i ask you /ptg/:

Pokken has sold pretty well, it did better then street fighter 5 did in some regions, but the pokemon franchise is weird with it's spin off games.
That, and the gameplay in pokken requires two screens, so if the NX doesn't have a gamepad like tool, the gameplay as it is now wouldn't work on the NX

I kind of feel your pain though, the playable roster has 1 Pokemon I absolutely hate (Garchomp) and 1 I greatly dislike (Sceptile) while none of my actual favorites got in. The only one I somewhat enjoy is Suicune, which is my current main. But hey, shit happens. I find some consolation in the fact that Suicune is one of the top tier characters in this game while Garchomps are usually free points on ranked.

Other times I make an outfit around a theme, and my standard trainer's outfit was originally made to match Garchomp's colours.

I use the spinning kick to blow past projectiles, but that's the only thing I really know right now. The projectile attacks have very narrow range and most other attempts to get in seem to be so obvious that a blind man could see them coming.

Because it has a near instant full screen piercing projectile that does massive damage, has almost no cooldown, can be directed upwards, and has an aerial version.
It has a distanced command grab with a huge hitbox in duel phase, an anti projectile attack, and the highest priority attack in the game, an attack that does insane damage, and has negligable drawbacks which can be immidiately mitigated by an assist.
That's why Chandelure is so OP.
