How? Most Gen 2 pokemon I can think of have a "plain" feel IMO, they look a lot closer to real things, see Noctowl, Furret, Ursaring, Ladyba, Sunflora.
Of course there's also some less natural looking Pokemon from Gen 2 like Slugma, Dunsparse or Skarmory. But either way it doesn't fit the description.
I'm just not coming up with any Gen 2 Pokemon that are anything like this in concept or execution. It shares a simplistic color palette but so do Pokemon in other gens like Wailord, Cranidos or Darmanitan.

Only his front is entirely black from neck down, like a red panda. His back is pink and also happens to have a trademark red panda tail. I think my biggest problem with the design itself is how from the front the pink head and the black body are basically separated via a single line, it looks really unnatural, like the head's just a cap or something. Also Snorlax projects a lot more personality despite it also being a really simple design. It's fat, it has sleepy eyes, etc. I think what they were trying to do with this thing is to contrast how cute it is with how large/strong it is, but it doesn't really work for me.

When you legit look at it from this way, the spooky pika sheet ghost mon looks quite cute and adorable.

The evolutionary process is a hard shell encasing Quilladin and bursting open to become armor on Chesnaught.
