What are the chances of this feature ever returning?
Nonexistent, Pokemon Amie basically replaces this and GF's reasoning for not bringing it back is "HGSS wouldn't feel special anymore if every other game had it."

Eventually it will happen. That I'm sure. But due to the proportions of the models it could be harder to "realistically" put them (the big ones at least).

Seeing as the 3D overworld has been upgraded from those chibi models they used in XY, and the trainers now are the same size both in and out of battle, I think it's actually quite safe to assume we might get it some time in the near future. Maybe not Gen 8, but certainly before Gen 10. All they have to do is give the battle models walking animations.

Yeah, because the 3DS will die before the next games are out. In 3D on the next console? Pretty good odds, considering. They just have to give the models walking animations, everything else is done.
High because the switch to 3D models makes it extremely easy to implement. Won't be in SM though. Probably on next games on NX.

Indeed. Never understood why people dismiss following Pokémon because of Amie. For the most part, they're different, but together they'd make an amazing feature.
