Today we will be discussing the only native bug evolutionary line from Kalos region: Scatterbug, Spewpa and Vivillon.
Scatterbug and Spewpa are nothing special. They are pretty cute and not much else to say about them. Spewpa has wing-like cloth covering it which is pretty awesome I guess.
And lastly we have Vivillon. After a stellar bug generation came Vivillon which was pretty disappointing. Vivillon itself has a good design apart from its weird legs and has very interesting and appealing gimmick in its multi coloured patterns depending on region. Unfortunately unlike the generation 5 bugs its stats do not shine at all. With a BST of only 411 this devilish pokemon doesn't even have a unique type combination like bug/fairy(although we have Cutiefly now) or bug/psychic. Luckily for it despite having paper thin defences it does a good niche which makes it somewhat viable by having compound eyes coupled with sleep powder hurricane and quiver dance.
All in all its a good pokemon and I love it and even though it couldn't have an better type combination its sad to see it not having a BST at 450 at least to boost its average speed and sp atk to make it a bit more threatening.
What are your thoughts?
I wish it had been Bug/Fairy with Pixelate
Fuck you I know the name isn't the same in Japanese but the puns man, the puns
The Vivillon line deserves to be much more loved.

It doesn't really get any good normal type moves though. It's not like a butterfly is going to be able to learn Hyper Voice. I suppose they could give it Tri Attack, which would be siiiiick.

Honestly it could learn Hyper Voice and I don't think anyone should bat an eye. it's one of those moves generic enough that it could really fit anything if they wanted it to.
The Vivillon line is really creative though if you just get past early butterfly number 3 and bug/flying type number wumbillion. The pixel scales thing is really sweet.

As we saw Gen VI broke the streak that the new early mons are shit by introducing Huge Power Digggersby and Gale Wings Talonflame, but Vivillon unfortunatetly didn't broke that the early bug type was bad at competitive, even worse is that its family is the only Bug-type added on Gen VI, AND, it can be seen as a stronger Butterfree.
It also has Powder, (A move that cancels any Fire-type move, but deals Fire-type damage) an interesting move that it should not have.

I think Viola was the main problem. Since they made Vivillon her ace and she was the first gym leader Vivillon had to evolve quickly and its stats had to suck.

That's the same for every early game 3 stage bug. For the record Gen V's came quite a bit later than usual. I actually think it was brilliant tbqh to have the first gym leader be someone who uses the early bug. Early bugs can evolve quickly and therefore can have much higher stats than most pokemon at that point in the game, but they aren't too high later and it kind of curves out. I'm really surprised it took them six gens to do it. It would have been smarter than Onix in RBY.

I really like the pixel design and the different patterns it can have. Those automatically make it better than the other generic butterflies/moths.
