I don't see the "edginess" in realising that religion often makes people believe and fight for stuff that goes against a good, educated, reasonable society. Like fighting sex ed or evolution. If you just have a personal god, and you ripped out 99% of the pages in the bible, I don't give a fuck. Once you start brain washing kids, it's not "edgy" to speak out against you.

Ive never met a religious person anywhere near as edgy or obnoxious as any given atheist. The most relgious person i ever met just asked if I found Jesus (because im Jewish) out of concern for my immortal soul, but atheist just make fun of people who belive in God (not Jews though, they alway make sure to tell me how "my people" are far from the worst of them). You are all a bunch of smug dillweeds who adhere to your own doctrine of beliefs just like anybother religion. You constantly try to "convert" people by trying to disprove their own faith, you are extremely tetative of ideas that challege ypur own, and the worst part is the only value you promote is smugness, pride, and a false sense of intellect (the amount of atheist who say they believe 8ve in science, but dont know anything about it, really grinds my gears as a Bio-Major). Atheism is the most obnoxious belief system out there.

All conceptions of a god are equally stupid, I never claimed a specific religion

The basis of claiming a god is to have answers for a the unknown, or more accurately, for the religious leaders to gain a knowledge based superiority over whatever community, this goes from shamanism to the super established religions.

As what we consider unknown has shrunk the necessity for a god has shrunk simultaneously, this is not coincidence, it is 100% causal

I've always found it interesting how in some countries religion is one of the first things you talk about with strangers. Are your lives really that uninteresting that your defining character trait is what god you do or do not worship?

I live in a secular country and I can count the times I've talked to my friends about religion on my left hand. It's not a thing here and everyone moves on with their day just fine.

Can you tell me specifically what is stupid about the Christian Contemplative conception of God, namely the concept of God written about by Thomas Merton and Meistersinger Eckhart?

No, you can not, and there are many more conceptions of God that you know little about. What about Allah in the Sufist tradition?

It's not "human nature" to condemn the use of condoms in Africa, letting AIDS ravage the shit out of it. It's not "human nature" to argue that alchemy has a place next to chemistry, and "intelligent" design has a place next to evolution. It's bullshit is what it is.

Besides, you can't deny that religion can motivate people to do things they otherwise would not do. Whenever people defend ritually mutilating boy's penises, religion almost always comes up. Think about that shit. It's a disgrace. Yes, people kill and steal and rape without religion, but sometimes their motives can be traced directly to a religion they were indoctrinated into.

Which belief? The lack of belief in deities? What doctrine is: "I don't accept the notion of gods"? What rules does that set out? What action does it demand? What must you think to not hold a belief in deities?

Is it a hobby to not collect stamps? It's as old as it is solid. Yes, if you weirdly spend your time avoiding stamps, that could be a hobby, but simply not doing it is not a hobby. Don't conflate anti-theism with atheism.

Thank you, Gary.

Anyway, I always thought that what "religion" that people in the Pokemon had was a form of shamanism/animism, similar to Shinto belief.

People make offerings and even pray to extremely powerful Pokemon, whether to help them or just stay the fuck away (in the case of Pokemon like Tornadus and Thundurus).

It isn't a codified belief system, and like Shintoism in Japan the majority of people in Pokemon don't *really* worship in a theological sense, but people give it lip service and the superstitious/religious still deeply respect those powerful Pokemon.

>superstitious
It does seem like they're very superstitious, but then again when you live around a bunch of creatures that can transport you to hell, can you really determine if it ever is just simple superstition?
>>
>>27100114
Yeah, the idea of religion in Japan is different from the western one. Most people there say they're not relgious, but they don't mean that they're atheists exactly; almost anyone who says that means that they believe in Shinto in one way or another.

I think there must be something like that in the Pokémon world too, especially centered around Legendary Pokémon.

It's sad that we can't have this kind of discussions without fedoras showing up. It's usually them who crash this kind of threads.
>>
>>27100183
OP here. I'll take the blame on the thread derail since I didn't really specify.
The only blatant instances of religion we've seen in games is the foreign building (and to a lesser extent all the shrines throughout gen 4/5) so when Alola showed up with Tapu Koko as a guardian deity, I thought it was worthy of discussion to compare them. Despite being a lot about creation and myths, Sinnoh managed to steer pretty clear from religion controversies in the main game, but with Alola starting off with a ceremony it certainly seems like these guardians will be more in-tune with the theme or story, much more than the lake guardians at least.
>>
>>27100183
I think it's clear that in the past Pokemon were treated with far more reverence, at least the powerful ones, and in the modern day there are regions that are far more superstitious/religious than others.

Kanto has Pokemon Tower, but even then that's ultimately just a graveyard. Meanwhile, Johto has several towers dedicated to certain Pokemon, as well as the Ruins of Alph.
>>
>>27100239
References to religion used to be pretty subtle until now. Now that we've got rituals and everything, it's pretty obvious that the Alolan religion is going to be an important part of the plot.
>>
>>27100251
I think you can "blame" that on the fact that in the first generation all the "lore" was still unwritten, but religion has always been here and there in Pokémon.

The only region where I sense a lack of religious symbolism is Kalos. They could still be believers in whatever religion is practiced in the Pokémon world, but it's clear that it's not as important to them as in Johto or Sinnoh. I wonder if they made it like that on purpose, considering that France is where the laïcité movement started.
>>
>>27099202
Considering that like half of pokemon gyms in GO are churches, I'd say yes.

On the flip side religion has been a font of culture, knowledge and art for the vast majority of human history. Most scientific achievement has come from religious scientists and philosophers, most of the the most beautiful buildings and works of art created were inspired by religion.

I know you're obviously a teen in the edgy 'Religion is cancer!' phase, but in the grand scheme of things religion has done more good than bad. Religion is more than just Christian fundies and Islamic terrorists.

I wouldn't say it has done more good than bad, but I wouldn't say the opposite is true either. And it can be argued to death whether this crusade or that charity is because of or in spite of religion, motivations are often complex.

Fun Fact: The Catholic Monastic System was the sole responsible entity in Europe to keep keep copies of classical works of scientific thought and philosophy, even making great contributions themselves

Fun Fact: The Dark Ages came about because of war, famine, and mass migration, and not religious oppression. The layman was more concerned with staying alive instead of scientific thought.

>Expecting atheists to know anything about theology outside of their rejection of their father's religion as a means of rebellion or an attempt to assert their independence despite living at home.

Fun Fact: The Catholic Church did a really great job on killing scientists and destroying data, to the point this anon is this ignorant and imbecile.

>but atheist just make fun of people who belive in God (not Jews though, they alway make sure to tell me how "my people" are far from the worst of them). You are all a bunch of smug dillweeds who adhere to your own doctrine of beliefs just like anybother religion

Way to overgeneralize, fagzilla.

>People can steal and rape without religion but sometimes their motives can be traced directly to a religion they were indoctrinated into.
Wow it's almost like humans are motivated by self interest and sometimes people use that to rationalize screwing someone else over be they religious or otherwise.
However, it sounds like you're trying to say that there is a misappropriate amount of people who both commit crimes and in some shape or form belief in God.
It's almost like the majority of humans believe in God to varying degrees ranging from the pious of various religions to agnostics who don't deny that God could be real and they simple don't have the grounds to say.
To summarize you've allowed your narcissistic fetish with being an "enlightened" atheist to warp your viewing of simple statistical facts into making religious people as a whole seem immoral.
>>
>>27101081
Yes I understand, I'm an agnostic atheist

The whole idea of us understanding if there is a creator or even thinking that a god in any sense that we would understand exists is the stupidity

So even going about with a pretense of "There is a god" is useless drivel

If there is a diety, it won't be something that we understand so even contemplating if there is one, or acting like there is one does not pass newton's flaming laser sword

So you should go about your life as an atheist and realize anyone even muttering something about religion or gods, is either fooled by others or fooling others

>"no this is all there is because humans are the center of the universe".
That's such a backwards way of looking at it. That's how theists see things. They want to be the special creations of godly beings. Atheists just acknowledge that God is supernatural and that nothing supernatural is real.
>>
Tapu Koko and the rest of the Alolan deities are not deities in the sense that most of you guys might be thinking. They're more like local deities or guardians, whose definitions fit under a different umbrella than the all-powerful universe-rending gods most of you are thinking about.
>>
>>27102253
Of course they are.
An advertising agency run by Lizard squad men.

You mean Darwin?

You realize Darwin isn't a god to us, he just devised the framework for the explanation for mass speciation
>>

Religion exists in every world where intelelgent species inhabit. Not even saying that in the sense of "Atheists are dumb and religion is smart" but in the sense that religion is a building block of culture and society, like science or art.

Atheists are pragmatic individuals who understand that if ghosts and vampires aren't real, gods probably aren't either. There is no supernatural element to the world. There is no god either.
>>
>>27104722
Literally millions of ghost sighting around the world. No one knows what happened after death ect. Yea no atheist are just fat (or anorexic) unlikable scum bags that think they are smart and wont shut up about a religion they dont like.

Yet zero proof or evidence.

Just like God. It's a figment of our brains. We're just big naked apes with delusions of grandeur.

Yes the Catholic Church was powerful and preserved much of the old world; No this does not make it infallible to arguments not based on criticism of their actions, but on criticisms of their fundamental beliefs.

How impractical.
9 out of 10 times, theism is bundled with a bunch of awful junk. Alone, I guess it doesn't matter too much, although if someone believes in something without evidence, it's likely they'll believe in more things without evidence, so even then, theism is harmful.

I'd say its 50/50. Yes, there are worshipped deities in the Pokemon world, but practically they are no more powerful than a very well-trained 'mon.

In short, think gods, but minus the infallibility.
