I just hit level 5, and dunno what i can do at a gym.
I get that im too low a level to take it, but in ingress we were always able to interact with enemy portals to get items; seeing as this is almost a reskin of ingress using the same locations and pics from portals to pokestops, i figure theres a mechanic im missing..
Doesnt seem like i can do anything but fight..

There's a group of Valor assholes that basically run all the gyms and have a goddamn system set up to ensure that no one else controls it for more than like half an hour.
The rest of them are cool though.

Don't fight gyms that you know you'll lose against unless it's your own team, fighting your own teams gym will boost its prestige and if it's boosted enough another spot will open for your Pokemon to join the gym. Up to 10 people can have a Pokemon in a gym at one time.

You can use up to six pokemon to try to take a gym. If you beat all the pokemon there it will lose points and the level will go down a certain amount. Once it has been beaten enough times to hit zero, it's free for claiming.
At friendly gyms it's the opposite. You can fight to train and each time you win the gym will gain more exp and the level will eventually build it. The higher level the gym the more pokemon can be placed there.
You can only get items from pokestops but you can gain exp from winning battles.
