You have to train to get its level up. The higher the gym's level, the more Pokémon can be placed there. One Pokémon per trainer in each gym though.

I think the number of slots depends on the gym level. So you have to fight them to make the gym stronger to create an open slot when it levels up. Took me a while to figure it out though.
When you get to a gym with an open slot (ie the gym is level 3 and there are only 2 pokes in the gym) there will be another button that lets you add your pokemon in.

The level of the gym dictates how many pokemon are defending it. A level 2 gym will have two defenders. That's why you need to go to your team's gyms and buff them by training. The higher the prestige, the more work it takes for another team to beat it. Plus, once it has enough prestige, it goes up a level and a slot opens for another pokemon.

If you catch multiples of the same Mon, you can use the candies you get from each catch to train/evolve your bros. I always catch and release duplicates that are weaker than my one so I get the extra free candy. Rule of thumb is evolve first then train.

Pro tip: stop evolving. Cut that shit out right now. Just go catch/battle/hatch for a couple days. Then drop a lucky egg, evolve the 30+ evos you should have ready (bugs and pidgeys are best), shoot 2 levels up, go battle gyms with your new badass evos and get double exp there too. I went from level 13 to 17 with this under an hour

I saw a Ninetails yesterday and chased it around every direction. It stayed at 3 footprints the whole time, appearing and disappearing constantly at random locations. I seriously drove everywhere for it until I gave up because it just kept reappearing and disappearing.
Is this a glitch? Do really rare Pokemon move around a lot? Or did I just somehow pass it by over and over?

The higher your trainer level, the higher CP pokemon you find. Wait until you get one with a high CP (look at the half circle around it CP number, if it's nearly full to the left side, then you've got a strong one) then evolve it when you get enough candies.
When you evolve it, the evolution will have the same proportion of its CP cap filled in (again: see the half-circle bar around its number), so you save a LOT of candy and stardust to finish maxing it out.
