People didn't give up on it after gen one cause of the aesthetics of the Pokémon. Most of emails quit because the got in high school. I was in middle school when RB came out and remember the original craze. Everyone I knew who played it quit cause they felt it was to kiddie or w/e. GO will drop in a few months, even before Gen 2. Then people will try again when gen 2 is added because togepi and other mons that were in the show.
Then the GO fad is done, because they will realize that they can't catch them all, that after gen 3 there will be too much pokémon for them, or they will bitch about the design. You know, the regular genwunner stuff.

If they're smart, they'll make upgrades to the battle system the same time that they introduce later-generation Pokemon. That'll get the casual players to keep going for a while longer, which will introduce them to the newer Pokemon and not only keep the game going, but possibly convert some of these people to non-genwunners.
Actually, the absolute best thing to do would be, this fall, maybe a month before SM comes out, release a major update that adds better battling, trading, etc., as well as Gen VII Pokemon. If it's just Gen I and VII, the casual players will keep playing, but will be introduced to Gen VII Pokemon and will be steered towards buying SM once it comes out. They could probably double their SM sales if they do it correctly. (Which they won't.)

What is it design-wise that makes gen 4 and on looks so different from 1 and 2? 3rd is kind of a transition gen that bridges the gap, but what is it about the designs that changed?
