I'm in New Zealand, and it's been great here. Hardly any crashes because we're p. much our own timezone, and we're compact enough that we have plenty of active gyms and pokestops all over the city.
Honestly, the only way they make this better is to fix the server issues, and bring in turn based battling for gyms and wild pokemon. They do that, and we may as well replace the UN with Nintendo.

Ah. I can sympathize with being peeved by all those things; they've occurred to me as well. The battles at the gyms are still fun, but they just aren't the "Pokemon" experience I have wanted since I first played Pokemon Red. It's not exactly what I wanted, but I'll still accept this (though I'll probably get bored of it quickly if it doesn't at least get decent multiplayer support in a timely manner).
I also don't like that all these little children in my area who live near the gyms put level fuckyou pokemon in the garrison. :(

Evolution is done by gaining a set amount of each Pokemon's candies. You gain candies by capturing Pokemon in the evolution chain(3 per Pokemon), or by transferring your Pokemon to the Professor(1 candy). Example: Pidgey requires 12 candies to evolve into Pidgeotto, so you catch 4 Pidgeys(12 candies), transfer three(3 more candies), evolve the fourth. You need the same candies for the entire evolution chain.
There aren't really levels as such, but there are Combat Points(CP), which you can upgrade with candies(again specific to each Pokemon evolution chain), and stardust(generic material you get with every Pokemon catch and which can be used across all types).
