It's actually a combination of the two.
Pokemania from the 90's was so fucking massive, anybody who joined the series post-Gen 2 could not even imagine how it was. This Pokemon GO is nothing compared to the real Pokemania.
However, those who stayed to support the series also played a big role in the continuation of the series.
So here we are now.
