I would say battle graphics are pretty important. It's one of the reasons I enjoy playing gen 6 so much especially compared to gen 5.

Either make it good looking 3d or go back to sprites, you dense hacks
Though graphics and story aren't high up on my list of things I desire out of a Pokemon game, that doesn't mean I wouldn't enjoy nice graphics / a nice story.
For the record I like the Gen 6 models but its abhorrent how shitty they run.
