Gen 1 is without a doubt the worst one. It is completely outclassed by all others and the only somewhat viable reason to play them is nostalgia. There is no reason to play RB over FRLG. Try playing any of the gens between 1 and 6, as they are all immensely better than both 1 and 6. RSE is better in gen 3 than in the remakes, IMO.

All Pokémon games are essentially the same thing but some games do that thing better than others.
I personally think Gen 1 is one of the weakest generations in the series, but Gen 6 is even worse.
I think the specific reason you can't enjoy Gen 6 is because the games have gotten gradually more cutscene-intensive and more handholdy, and Gen 6 is the climax of both those things. I've played every Gen as it comes out and Gen 6 bores me with all its handholding.
Try Emerald or Platinum, they're both a lot better than Gen VI. Emerald might be better for you than Platinum just because Emerald is a lot faster engine-wise.

Not him, but having more Pokémon and more moves does make the game better since it creates a lot more variety in teams. Gen 3 also adds abilities, and the abilities that play a bigger role gameplay-wise, like Shedinja's Wonder Guard (Shedinja only has one hit point but its ability makes it immune to all attacks that aren't super effective) or Zoroark's Illusion (when it's sent out it disguises itself as another Pokémon in your party, and the illusion only breaks when it takes damage from an attack). Weather and entry hazards can also make a huge difference.
Gen 3 also introduced double battles, and Gen 5 introduced triple and rotation battles; they're all entirely separate battle modes that completely change up teambuilding and strategy. I personally still prefer single battles the most but a lot of people love double battles more than single battles, to the point that the official Game Freak "competitive" format is in doubles.

I personally think the first gen is way too overrated. Nostalgia aside, I really don't think it aged very well in terms of balance, Pokemon art, shoddy translation, and story. And why can't I catch anymore Pokemon if my box is full?
