It was very similar to Charizard's and Gliscor's returns except that Goodra can't fly so Kenzo, the warden of the swamp with Bellsprout drove him there in his little truck. They showed a flashback of when they went back to the swamp, Ash said that he was thinking about using a Pokemon at Oak's Lab as his 6th mon but then he said he'd rather battle alongside Goodra and the rest of his Kalos mons.

Goodra has returned as Ash's sixth Pokemon for the Pokemon League. Goodra was Ash's powerhouse before he left it behind at the swamp (A la Gliscor in a sense). Now he's back to fight in the league and hopefully gives Ash the extra power to beat Shota, if that happen he'll be facing Alain in the finals.
Of course if he loses to Shota, all this pandering to Ash- Greninja and bringing back Goodra will be wasted.

They do though. I just watched the episode when he fought the fairy type gym. And his bird used steel type moves to help. In the same gym though he made hawlucha use a bug type move to take down trick room. Which I wish was possible in games.

This, and I don't even watch the Pokemon anime anymore. At least in Japan the music and voice acting is done professionally, because these are people who actually feel connected to their characters, and the anime. Outside of JP, they're all just doing it for a quick check. The US cares nothing about the artistic quality of media aimed at children, especially when it comes to preserving the quality of an anime.
