I disagree. To be perfectly honest, I feel like dp appealed to the casual players a lot more than any Pokémon game before and after (except maybe xy, idk) and that's one of the reasons that bw did worse. I can see what you said being part of the reason, though. There WAS a lot of hate early on for the designs of the new mons.

I love DP and I love gen 4 but here we go

this is a generation with many of my favorites, but stuff like Magmortar is just terrible.
It is easy to forget, in retrospect, how much DP brought to the table when it was released: internet connectivity, Physical/Special split, etc. They were a really huge leap forward for the franchise. But when subsequent games have taken all of its innovations and improved upon them, it just leaves behind the single player campaign, which hasn't aged well.
