It has a battery saver mode in the settings. Turning off the music will probably help too.

I tried keeping it in my pocket with just the sound effects to notify me when something pops up. Luckily the app knows when the phone is upside down in a pocket so it has a dimmed screensaver mode but unfortunately I had two problems. The first is when I used some incense I couldn't hear an audio cue when incense attracted Pokemon showed up. The second was the app would stop responding to touch so I would need to quickly back out to my phone menu then reopen it without killing the app with a hard reset. Fortunately the Pokemon I encountered while the app wouldn't respond to touch were still there so it's mostly a recalibration issue.
